In order to evaluate the extraction property of new extractants, diglycolamide (DGA) compounds, we investigated the maximum extraction of di-, tri-, and tetravalent metal ions using nitric acid and n-dodecane. The limits of metal concentration (LOC) for Ca(II), Nd(III) and Zr(IV) in the organic phase are strongly influenced by HNO3 and the extractant concentration. For the purpose of enhancing the LOC value, we employed a modifier of the solvent, N,N-dihexyl-octanamide (DHOA) and DGA with a long alkyl chain, and examined the results. It was evident that LOC increased with the DHOA concentration and the length of the alkyl chain attached to the N atom of DGA. The stoichiometric values of LOC(Zr) estimated from the extraction reaction were confirmed by using the extraction condition: tetraoctyl-DGA/1 M DHOA + n-dodecane and 3 M HNO3.

Bioinspired strategies have been given extensive attention for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from waste streams because of their high selectivity, regeneration potential, and sustainability as well as low cost. Lanmodulin protein is an emerging biotechnology that is highly selective for REE binding. Mimicking lanmodulin with shorter peptides is advantageous because they are simpler and potentially easier to manipulate and optimize.

Hierarchically porous titania beads with and without amine functionalisation have been developed and tested as adsorbents for removal of highly toxic As(V) from environments affected by acid mine drainage (AMD). The unique acid stability of the titania framework enables these adsorbents to function in highly acidified environments and their granular form facilitates practical deployment under continuous flow conditions. Herein, both non-functionalised and amine-functionalised titania beads have been demonstrated to selectively remove As(V) from simulated and real AMD solutions at pH 2.

The solubility of Ca(OH)(cr), β-Ni(OH)(cr), Nd(OH)(s) and PuO(ncr, hyd) was investigated in cement porewater solutions containing glutarate (GTA), α-hydroxyisobutarate (HIBA) and 3-hydroxybutarate (HBA). These ligands were proposed as probable degradation products of UP2W, a polyacrylonitrile-based filter aid used in nuclear power plants. Results obtained in this work are compared with reported solubility data in the presence of iso-saccharinic acid (ISA), a polyhydroxocarboxylic acid resulting from cellulose degradation.

The calcium metallacrown Ca(II)[15-MC(Cu(II)N(Trpha))-5](2+) was obtained by self-assembly of Ca(II), Cu(II), and tryptophanhydroxamic acid. Its X-ray structure shows that the core calcium ion is well-encapsulated in the five oxygen cavity of the metallacrown scaffold. The kinetics of Ca-Ln core metal substitution was studied by visible spectrophotometry by addition of Ln(III) nitrate to solutions of Ca(II)[15-MC(Cu(II)N(Trpha))-5](2+) in methanol solution at pH 6.

Spectral analysis of Nd(III) complexes with some amino acids viz.; glycine, l-alanine, l-phenylalanine and l-aspartic acid in the presence and absence of Ca(2+) was carried out in some organic solvents; CH(3)OH, CH(3)CN, DMF and dioxane using comparative absorption spectra of 4f-4f transitions. The study was carried out by evaluating various energy interaction parameters like Slator-Condon (F(k)), Lande factor (ξ(4f)), nephelauxetic ratio (β), bonding parameter (b(1/2)), percent-covalency (δ) by applying partial and multiple regression analysis.
