Introduction Electrosurgery for dissection and hemostasis remains one of the foundational tools for the field of surgery as a whole. Monopolar cautery remains the most utilized modality for achieving the aforementioned goals. Given the prolonged history and pre-modern development of "Bovie" cautery, there remains a paucity of data regarding appropriate settings and intensity for various tissue types, procedures, or locales.

Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a two-hand technique combining harmonic scalpel (HS) and laparoscopic Peng's multifunction operative dissector (LPMOD) in patients who underwent laparoscopic hemihepatectomy (LHH).

Methods: We designed and conducted a case-control study nested in a prospectively collected laparoscopic liver surgery database. Patients who underwent LHH for liver parenchyma transection using HS + LPMOD were defined as cases (n = 98) and LPMOD only as controls (n = 47) from January 2016 to May 2018.

Background: Precise dissection with hemostasis while preserving important structures is critical in thyroid surgeries. In this study, we tested the safety of the Hemostatix Shaw scalpel (HSS) around the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) in porcine models.

Methods: Four piglets were used to obtain continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring data.

Laparoscopic Portal Territory Hepatectomy (Extended Segment 5) by an Indocyanine Green Fluorescent Dual Staining Technique (Video).

J Gastrointest Surg

January 2021

Department of General Surgery, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, 3 East Qingchun Road, Hangzhou, 310016, Zhejiang Province, China.

Background: Anatomical liver resections (ALR), which both remove the tumor and the corresponding segments, meet more with the surgical oncology's radical nature as reported by Makuuchi.1 Nevertheless, laparoscopic ALR remains a highly specialized procedure due to technical difficulty in the selection of the transection plane. This video aimed to present a novel laparoscopic ALR strategy of tumor-bearing portal territory hepatectomy with an indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescent dual staining technique.

Many methods are used during shoulder surgery to prevent wound contamination with , but there are no accepted standards for prevention. Some surgeons use an electrosurgical instrument instead of a scalpel blade during open shoulder surgery in an effort to prevent deep tissue contamination with . We sought to compare the transference rate of between a scalpel blade at room temperature and an electrosurgical blade heated to 41°C (temperature of electrosurgical blade after standard deltopectoral approach).
