The reinforcing value of food, measured by how hard someone is willing to work to obtain food, is influenced by food palatability, food deprivation and food variety, and may be a more powerful determinant of food intake than hedonics or liking. The reinforcing value of food is mediated in part by dopaminergic activity. Genotypes that influence dopamine transport and the density of dopamine D2 receptors interact with food reinforcement to influence eating behavior, and D2 receptor genotypes may influence food reinforcement and weight gain after smoking cessation. Inhibition of dopamine transport increases brain dopamine concentrations, which may influence weight gain after smoking cessation and can reduce energy intake in obese adults.

Interactions Between Bacterivorous Nematodes and Bacteria Reduce NO Emissions.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

Trophic interactions in micro-food webs, such as those between nematodes and their bacterial prey, affect nitrogen cycling in soils, potentially changing nitrous oxide (NO) production and consumption. However, how nematode-mediated changes in soil bacterial community composition affect soil NO emissions is largely unknown. Here, microcosm experiments are performed with the bacterial feeding nematode Protorhabditis to explore the potential of nematodes in regulating microbial communities and thereby soil NO emissions.

Background: Among bariatric surgeries, laparoscopic sleeve gastrostomy (LSG) has gained good global acceptance, but this surgery, like any other invasive procedure, has side effects. Various techniques have been tested to reduce these complications, which are used under the title of stapler line reinforcement (SLR). The purpose of this research is to compare the bleeding, leakage, mortality, food intolerance, re-hospitalization, and post-operative invasive therapeutic interventions in LSG surgery in two groups with and without omentopexy method.

Porous spontaneously polarized ceramic-reinforced ozone micro-nano bubbles for efficient oxidation of starch: Reaction uniformity, physicochemical properties, and mechanism.

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Guangxi University, Nanning 530004, China; Key Laboratory of New Low-carbon Green Chemical Technology, Education Department of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Nanning 530004, China. Electronic address:

The preparation of food-grade oxidized starch with eco-friendly ozone (O) as oxidant is limited by low mass transfer and reaction efficiency. This study proposed a porous spontaneously polarized ceramic-reinforced O micro-nano bubbles (PSPC-OMNB) technology to prepare oxidized cassava starch (PSPC-OMCS). Meanwhile, reaction uniformity, physicochemical properties, and formation mechanisms were emphasized for comprehensive investigation.

Rewards are rewarding owing to their hedonic or metabolic value. Individual differences in sensitivity to rewards are predictive of mental health problems but may reflect variation in metabolic types. We have assessed the association of two distinguishable aspects of reward sensitivity, openness to rewards (the striving towards multiple rewards) and insatiability by reward (the strong pursuit and fixation to a particular reward), with measures of metabolism and activity in a longitudinal study of representative birth cohort samples.

Objectives: Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) presents in up to half of adults and one-third of children admitted to Canadian hospitals and significantly impacts health outcomes. Strategies to screen, diagnose and treat DRM exist but policy to facilitate implementation and sustainability are lacking. The purpose of this study was to explore gaps, opportunities, barriers and enablers for DRM policy in Canada.
