Article Abstract

Organ procurement coordinators often provide independent interpretations of chest radiographs during donor care. Catheter or tube position, lobar atelectasis, extra-alveolar air, air bronchograms, pleural fluid, and other findings are important throughout donor care and when deciding if a lung is acceptable for transplantation. Technical factors, features of a normal chest radiograph, and abnormal radiographic findings are reviewed and examples are presented.

The carbon footprint and energy consumption of liver transplantation.

Front Transplant

January 2025

Department of Surgical, Medical, Biomolecular Pathology and Intensive Care, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy.

Background And Aims: There is growing interest in the environmental impact of surgical procedures, yet more information is needed specifically regarding liver transplantation. This study aims to quantify the total greenhouse gas emissions, or carbon footprint, associated with adult whole-size liver transplantation from donors after brain death, including the relevant back-table graft preparation.

Methods: The carbon footprint was calculated retrospectively using a bottom-up approach.

Background: The human gut microbiome strongly influences host metabolism by fermenting dietary components into metabolites that signal to the host. Our previous work has shown that Intestinimonas butyriciproducens is a prevalent commensal bacterium with the unique ability to convert dietary fructoselysine to butyrate, a well-known signaling molecule with proven health benefits. Dietary fructoselysine is an abundant Amadori product formed in foods during thermal treatment and is part of foods rich in dietary advanced glycation end products which have been associated with cardiometabolic disease.

Visualization using NIPTviewer support the clinical interpretation of noninvasive prenatal testing results.

BMC Med Genomics

January 2025

Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, Rudbeck Laboratory, Uppsala University, Uppsala, SE-751 85, Sweden.

Background: Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is increasingly used to screen for fetal chromosomal aneuploidy by analyzing cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in peripheral maternal blood. The method provides an opportunity for early detection of large genetic abnormalities without an increased risk of miscarriage due to invasive procedures. Commercial applications for use at clinical laboratories often take advantage of DNA sequencing technologies and include the bioinformatic workup of the sequence data.

Long-term risks of gene therapy are not fully understood. In this study, we evaluated safety outcomes in 783 patients over more than 2,200 total patient-years of observation from 38 T cell therapy trials. The trials employed integrating gammaretroviral or lentiviral vectors to deliver engineered receptors to target HIV-1 infection or cancer.
