Switches from pi- to sigma-bonding complexes controlled by gate voltages.

Published: October 2005

A conjugated polymer/metal ion/liquid-crystal molecular system was set between source and drain electrodes with a 100 nm gap. When gate voltage (Vg) increases, the current between source and drain electrodes increases. Infrared spectra show this system to be composed of pi and sigma complexes. At Vg = 0, the pi complex dominates the sigma complex, whereas the sigma complex becomes dominant when Vg is switched on. Calculations found that the pi complex has lower conductivity than the sigma complex.

Kinetic and Theoretical Studies of 3,5-Dicyanothiophene Reactivity with Cyclic Secondary Amines in Water and Acetonitrile: Quantification, Correlation, and Prediction.

The kinetics of the σ-complexation reactions of 3,5-dicyanothiophene with a series of cyclic secondary amines - has been studied in water and acetonitrile at 20 °C. Through the linear free energy relationship (LFER) log = s ( + ), the electrophilicity parameter of 3,5-dicyanothiophene has been determined and then integrated into the electrophilicity scale established by Mayr. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been employed to elucidate the reversal in reactivity order between piperidine and pyrrolidine observed in water.

Activation of N through transition-metal complexes has emerged as a powerful strategy for N fixation under mild conditions. Dissociative route and associative route are considered as two major routes for N transformation on transition-metal complexes. Homolysis of N between two metal fragments is the crucial step of the dissociative route and has been proven to be an efficient approach to the terminal metal nitride, which is the key intermediate for both routes.

Upgrade of Weak σ-hole Bond Donors via Cr(CO)3 Complexation.

Chemistry

Politecnico di Milano, Department of Chemistry, Materials, Chemical Engineer., via Mancinelli 7, 20131, Milan, ITALY.

Molecular recognition mediated by s-hole interactions is enhanced as the electrostatic potential at the σ-hole becomes increasingly positive. Traditional methods to strengthen σ-hole donor ability of atoms such as halogens often involve covalent modifications, such as, introducing electron-withdrawing substituents (neutral or positively charged) or electrochemical oxidation. Metal coordination, a relatively underexplored approach, offers a promising alternative.

Neutral mesoionic carbenes (MICs) based on a 1,2,3-triazole core have had a strong impact on various branches of chemistry such as homogeneous catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photochemistry/photophysics. We present here the first general synthesis of anionic mesoionic carbenes (anMICs) based on a 1,2,3-triazole core and a borate backbone. The free anMIC is stable in solution under an inert atmosphere at low temperatures, and can be stored for several weeks.

The two-fold reduction of tetrabenzo[a,c,e,g]cyclooctatetraene (TBCOT, or tetraphenylene, 1) with K, Rb, and Cs metals reveals a distinctive core transformation pathway: a newly formed C-C bond converts the central eight-membered ring into a twisted core with two fused five-membered rings. This C-C bond of 1.589(3)-1.
