Protein-coated microcrystals (PCMC), a biocatalyst preparation previously demonstrated to display substantially increased transesterification activity of proteases and lipases in organic solvents when compared to their as received counterparts [Kreiner M, Moore BD, Parker MC (2001) Chem. Commun. 12:1096--1097], was applied to oxidoreductases. Horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (HLADH), catalase (CAT), soybean peroxidase and horseradish peroxidase were immobilised onto K(2)SO(4) crystals and dehydrated in a 1-step process, resulting in PCMC. These PCMC preparations showed enhanced activity in different organic solvents in most types of reactions tested. The highest activation was observed with HLADH (50-fold as active as enzyme as received) and CAT (25-fold).

Magnetoliposomes containing magnetite, soy lecithin, stigmasterol, and beta-sitosterol of the mean size minor than 160 nm were obtained by a scalable and green process using autoclave and sonication without organic solvents. The formation, size of the liposome, linkage, and encapsulation of the magnetite were evaluated by Cryo-TEM. The stability of magnetoliposomes after storage for 6 months at 4 °C was improved by liposome size, the ability of soy lecithin to preserve the magnetite phase against oxidation, pH, polydispersity index, and zeta potential.

Polysaccharide-based metal-organic frameworks have attracted widespread attention due to their combination of the biocompatibility and flexibility of polysaccharides. Cyclodextrin are interesting bio-ligands in the construction of polysaccharide-based MOFs. Conventional methods for preparing cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) are often time-consuming and inefficient.

The conventional hydrothermal synthesis and inherent hysteresis behavior limited the application of MOFs owing to the low kinetic efficiency in dynamic molecular adsorption. Herein, we developed an in-situ nucleation strategy for the preparation of MIL-100-Fe and immobilized it with hierarchy porous scaffold of TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TCNF) sponge in the absence of additional organic solvent during fabrication under ambient conditions. The newly recognized mechanisms of gradient molecular transfer were proposed to illustrate the comprehensive DCF adsorption process from solution to micropores of MIL-100-Fe at molecule level triggered by the stray capacitance, varied Laplace pressure, size exclusion and cellulosic labyrinth.

Spirulina is a unicellular microalga, characterized by blue/green color, that has received significant attention for its interesting nutritional composition. Phenolic compounds and phycocyanin (PC) are responsible for the many biological activities of Spirulina. Spirulina phenolic compounds are usually extracted using organic solvents, while PC is extracted with water or phosphate buffer solution, obtaining an extract characterized by low stability and low purity.

Luminescent lanthanide compounds stand out for their distinctive characteristics including narrow emission bands, substantial Stokes shifts, high quantum yields, and unique luminescent colors. However, Ln is highly susceptible to vibrational quenching from X-H (X = O/N) high-energy oscillators in the embedded organic antenna, resulting in significant nonradiative energy dissipation of the D excited states of Ln. Herein, we introduce a strategy based on supramolecular interactions to modulate the nonradiative transitions in a new Zn-Tb heterometallic compound, [ZnTb(HL)(NO)Cl]·2CHCN·HO (), based on a phenyl-substituted pyrazolinone-modified salicylamide-imide ligand ().
