A novel approach to utilizing whey permeate, the cultivation of mycelia of the edible mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus, is introduced. Response surface analysis (RSA) was successfully applied to determine the combination of substrate concentration, temperature and pH that would result in a maximal mycelial extension rate under solid state cultivation. The conditions to maximize the mycelial extension rate were predicted to be 44 g lactose l(-1), pH 6.0 and 24.2 degrees C. Subsequent verification of these levels agreed with model predictions.

Spasticity is a common comorbidity of spinal cord injury (SCI), disrupting motor function and resulting in significant discomfort. While elements of post-SCI spasticity can be assessed using pre-clinical SCI models, the robust measurement of spasticity severity can be difficult due to its periodic and spontaneous appearance. Electrical stimulation of sensory afferents can elicit spasticity-associated motor responses, such as spasms; however, placing surface electrodes on the hindlimbs of awake animals can induce stress or encumbrance that could influence the expression of behaviour.

Intercellular communication is fundamental to multicellular life and a core determinant of outcomes during viral infection, where the common goals of virus and host for persistence and replication are generally at odds. Hosts rely on encoded innate and adaptive immune responses to detect and clear viral pathogens, while viruses can exploit or disrupt these pathways and other intercellular communication processes to enhance their spread and promote pathogenesis. While virus-induced signaling can result in systemic changes to the host, striking alterations are observed within the cellular microenvironment directly surrounding a site of infection, termed the virus microenvironment (VME).

We developed antibiotic-based micelles with bone-targeting and charge-switchable properties (P-CASMs) for treating infectious osteomyelitis. The amphiphilic molecules are formed by combining ciprofloxacin (CIP) with ligand 1 through a mild salifying reaction, and spontaneously self-assemble into antibiotic-based micelles (ASMs) in aqueous solution. Acrylate groups on ligand 1 enable cross-linking of ASMs with pentaerythritol tetra(mercaptopropionate) via a click reaction, forming pH-sensitive cross-linked micelles (CASMs).

Traditionally, abiotic factors such as pH, temperature, and initial Cr(VI) concentration have been undoubtedly recognized as the external driving forces that dramatically affect the microbial-mediated remediation of Cr(VI) pollutants. However, concentrating on whether and how the biological behaviors and metabolic activities drive the microbial-mediated Cr(VI) detoxification is a study-worthy but little-known issue. In this study, Leucobacter chromiireducens CD49 isolated from heavy-metal-contaminated soil was identified to tolerate 8000.

Enhancing the understanding of the rainfall-runoff temporal dynamics in semi-arid and semi-humid regions is crucial for flood disaster mitigation. Loess Plateau is a unique environment within semi-arid and semi-humid regions, characterized by its deep loess soil, prevalent short-duration intense rainfall, and changes in underlying surface conditions. In this research, 25 catchments from the Loess Plateau were chosen to examine the temporal variations in event runoff responses across different time scales.
