Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning based applications are thought to impact the practice of healthcare by transforming diagnostic patient management approaches. However, domain knowledge, clinical and coding expertise are likely the biggest challenge and a substantial barrier in developing practical AI models. Most informatics and AI experts are not familiar with the nuances in medicine, and most doctors are not efficient coders.

3D-Printed Self-Assembling Helical Models for Exploring Viral Capsid Structures.

Biomimetics (Basel)

December 2024

Departments of Biological Sciences and Mathematical Sciences, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716, USA.

This work presents a novel application of additive manufacturing in the design of self-assembling helical viral capsids using 3D-printed components. Expanding on prior work with 3D-printed self-assembling spherical capsids, we developed helical models that integrate geometric parameters and magnetic interactions to mimic key features of the assembly process of helical viral capsids. Using dual-helix phyllotactic patterns and simplified electrostatic simulations, these models consistently self-assemble into a cylinder, providing unique insights into the structural organization and stability of helical capsids.

Aim: To demonstrate how workshop and mentoring across a network of radiotherapy centers helped in transitioning from point A to volume-based image guided brachytherapy in carcinoma cervix.

Materials And Methods: Based on discussion with different centers across the network, the lapses in cervical cancer treatment were identified and a workshop was designed to change the practice pattern. The main focus of the workshop was to streamline EBRT dose prescription protocols and implement volume based image guided brachytherapy through mentoring and hands on training.

Preferences in Suture Skills Instruction: Virtual Versus In-Person Instruction.

J Surg Res

December 2024

Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. Electronic address:

Introduction: As medical education increasingly incorporates digital methods such as video lectures, e-learning, and virtual meetings, it becomes crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual classrooms in teaching surgical techniques. This study aims to assess whether live virtual classrooms can effectively convey surgical skills to medical students.

Methods: First- and second-y medical students were randomized to in-person or live-video sessions once a week, for 2 wk.

Food safety is a global challenge, with nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide falling ill each year from consuming contaminated food. The risk is particularly high in ready-to-eat (RTE) products, which are consumed without further cooking to eliminate harmful microorganisms. To address this, the University of Cordoba and the University of Bologna, in the framework of the EU-FORA programme, developed a training programme focused on quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) for in RTE food processing chains, a significant public health concern due to its association with severe foodborne illnesses.
