Reference frame and haptic discrimination of orientations in infants.

Body-tilt effect on the haptic discrimination of orientations and the 'oblique effect' (better discrimination of the vertical orientation than of an oblique orientation) were examined in 5-month-old infants. Body tilt leads to a mismatch between egocentric and gravitational reference frames and indicates in which reference frame orientations and oblique effect are defined. A familiarization/reaction to novelty procedure was used in upright body and tilted body conditions. Results revealed the occurrence of a haptic oblique effect in the upright body position, which disappeared when the body was tilted. The results suggest that spatial orientations and the oblique effect depend on a mixed reference frame that integrates not only gravitational information but also egocentric information.

Gravity has long been purported to serve a unique role in sensorimotor coordination, but the specific mechanisms underlying gravity-based visuomotor realignment remain elusive. In this study, astronauts (9 males, 2 females) performed targeted hand movements with eyes open or closed, both on the ground and in weightlessness. Measurements revealed systematic drift in hand-path orientation seen only when eyes were closed and only in very specific conditions with respect to gravity.

Hypothesis: Coherent structures by low-Stokes-number particles are induced within a closed flow, in which ordered flow regions known as Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) tori emerge. A variety of structures with different spatial characteristics has been predicted by varying the Stokes number, whereas the coexistence of structures in flow suspending various types of particles has not been hitherto demonstrated.

Experiments: Half-zone liquid bridges of O () are prepared as a closed system to induce thermocapillary-driven time-dependent flow under normal gravity conditions.
