Background: The inference of homology from statistically significant sequence similarity is a central issue in sequence alignments. So far the statistical distribution function underlying the optimal global alignments has not been completely determined.
Results: In this study, random and real but unrelated sequences prepared in six different ways were selected as reference datasets to obtain their respective statistical distributions of global alignment scores. All alignments were carried out with the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm and optimal scores were fitted to the Gumbel, normal and gamma distributions respectively. The three-parameter gamma distribution performs the best as the theoretical distribution function of global alignment scores, as it agrees perfectly well with the distribution of alignment scores. The normal distribution also agrees well with the score distribution frequencies when the shape parameter of the gamma distribution is sufficiently large, for this is the scenario when the normal distribution can be viewed as an approximation of the gamma distribution.
Conclusion: We have shown that the optimal global alignment scores of random protein sequences fit the three-parameter gamma distribution function. This would be useful for the inference of homology between sequences whose relationship is unknown, through the evaluation of gamma distribution significance between sequences.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is prevalent among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The association between dietary patterns and CKD in elderly T2DM patients remains understudied. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary patterns and CKD in elderly Chinese patients with T2DM.

Background: National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines recommend sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for patients with > 10% risk of positivity, consider SLNB with 5-10% risk, and foregoing with < 5% risk. The integrated 31-gene expression profile (i31-GEP) algorithm combines the 31-GEP with clinicopathologic variables, estimating SLN positivity risk.
Methods: The i31-GEP SLNB risk prediction accuracy was assessed in patients with T1-T2 tumors enrolled in the prospective, multicenter DECIDE study (n = 322).

Background: Aging is a critical phase of human, necessitating focused attention on the unique issues, needs, and diseases that older adults face. Self-efficacy has been recognized as a fundamental prerequisite for behavior change in health promotion and health education. Therefore, the present study was aimed to empower older people to improve their self-efficacy based on Pender's health promotion model.

Background: Whilst numerous studies have explored the relationship between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and diabetes, there remains significant conflicting evidence as to their relationship. Some studies suggest an increased likelihood of developing AD in individuals with diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes (T2D) and that both diseases share pathological features. In contrast, other studies indicate that T2D is more aligned with vascular cognitive impairment and dementia and associated cerebrovascular/white matter pathology.
