Background: Anticancer drugs have been demonstrated to affect gut mucosal morphology and cause gastrointestinal symptoms. We hypothesized that even small doses of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) would reduce gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) mass and function.

Methods: Mice underwent IV cannulation and received continuous infusion of normal saline or 10 mg/kg of 5-FU for 5 days. GALT cell numbers, phenotypes, and mucosal immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels were measured.

Results: During the infusion, there were no significant differences in food intake or body weight change between the 2 groups. Cell yields from the intraepithelial space and lamina propria of the small intestine were lower in the 5-FU than the control group. The lamina propria CD4/CD8 ratio was reduced in the 5-FU compared with the control group. Intestinal and respiratory tract IgA levels were lower in the 5-FU than in the control group.

Conclusions: A small dose of 5-FU reduces GALT cell number and mucosal IgA levels, regardless of food intake.

Background: Genital inflammation increases HIV susceptibility and is associated with the density of pro-inflammatory anaerobes in the vagina and coronal sulcus. The penile urethra is a critical site of HIV acquisition, although correlates of urethral HIV acquisition are largely unknown. While Streptococcus mitis is a consistent component of the urethral flora, the presence of Gardnerella vaginalis has been linked with prior penile-vaginal sex and urethral inflammation.

The expansion of irrigated agriculture in semi-arid regions exacerbates the degradation of wetland ecosystems. Precision water recharge can facilitate near-natural restoration of degraded wetlands by alleviating the conflict between wetlands and agricultural water use. However, although the ecological significance of precision water recharge as a nature-based solution for restoring wetland vegetation has been widely acknowledged, the mechanisms driving its role in spikelet development and seed growth in Carex schmidtii Meinsh.

Background: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) plays a crucial role in the maturation the neonatal mucosal barrier. The accumulation of IgA antibody-secreting cells (ASCs) in the lactating mammary gland facilitates the secretion of IgA antibodies into milk, which are then passively to the suckling newborn, providing transient immune protection against gastrointestinal pathogens. Physiologically, full-term infants are unable to produce IgA, required for mucosal barrier maturation for at least 10 days after birth.

Background: This research aimed to assess the clinical characteristics of chronic diarrhoea in children and explore the prognostic value of nutritional status and immune indicators.

Methods: A total of 190 patients with chronic diarrhoea from January 2017 to June 2020 were enrolled to analyze their epidemiology. The patients were divided into a better prognosis group (cured and improved) and a poor prognosis group (uncured).

IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is related to the balance of gut microbiota. However, it is unclear whether changes in the gut microbiota can cause IgAN or attenuate its progression. This study employed IgAN and human microbiota-associated (HMA)-IgAN models to investigate the impact of IgAN on gut microbiota alteration and the mechanisms by which gut microbiota might trigger IgAN.
