Objective: To compare patient radiation exposure and procedure time for lumbar epidural steroid injections (ESIs) performed under CT-fluoroscopy (CTF) vs spiral CT-guidance.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective cohort study of 767 consecutive lumbar ESIs performed between 2015-2023 using CTF vs spiral CT-guidance was conducted. Patient characteristics (age, sex, weight), procedural characteristics (injection level, type of ESI, trainee participation), and outcomes (patient radiation exposure, procedure time, pain relief, complications) were compared.

Intrauterine inflammation from chorioamnionitis (CA) is associated with placental dysfunction and increased risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), the chronic lung disease of prematurity. Antenatal steroid (ANS) treatment improves early respiratory outcomes for premature infants. However, it remains unclear whether ANS improve long-term respiratory outcomes, and whether these effects are mediated through improvement of placental dysfunction and/or direct impact on the fetal lung.

Thiol-Disulfide Homeostasis in Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Rats.

J Int Adv Otol

November 2024

Ear-Nose and Throat/Head and Neck Surgery Clinics, İzmir Bozyaka Teaching Hospital, Health Sciences University, İzmir, Türkiye.

Background: This study was designed to assess if thiol-disulfide homeostasis could be used as diagnostic biomarker in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in a laboratory animal model.

Methods: The study was carried out with a total of 28 female albino rats in 4 groups: group 1 (control group) included rats that were not exposed to noise or any study treatment; in group 2, following noise exposure, rats received 2 mg of dexamethasone per kilogram of body weight via the intramuscular route for 5 days; in Group 3, rats were exposed to noise and received a saline solution for 5 days, in a volume (0.15 cc) matched to that of dexamethasone administered in group 2; and in group 4, rats were exposed to noise, and blood samples were collected during the early phase to assess thiol-disulfide homeostasis without administering any treatment.

Objective: To use animal pharmacokinetic data and FluidSIM modeling to estimate human dexamethasone perilymph concentrations from plasma concentration measurements over time following a single intratympanic administration of SPT-2101.

Study Design: Perilymph and plasma dexamethasone concentrations were measured in guinea pigs and African green monkeys over 3 to 6 weeks post-intratympanic administration of SPT-2101. Plasma concentrations of dexamethasone were measured in Ménière's disease patients post-intratympanic administration of SPT-2101.

Article Synopsis
  • Meniere disease, responsible for 15% of vestibular disorders, lacks an effective treatment to manage vertigo episodes, prompting further research into potential therapies.
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the medication venlafaxine against a placebo in alleviating symptoms of Meniere disease in a controlled clinical trial over 22 weeks.
  • A total of 40 patients participated, receiving either venlafaxine or placebo, with key measures focusing on the frequency of vertigo episodes and patients' overall health-related quality of life.
