The release of the 1000th complete microbial genome will occur in the next two to three years. In anticipation of this milestone, the Fellowship for Interpretation of Genomes (FIG) launched the Project to Annotate 1000 Genomes. The project is built around the principle that the key to improved accuracy in high-throughput annotation technology is to have experts annotate single subsystems over the complete collection of genomes, rather than having an annotation expert attempt to annotate all of the genes in a single genome. Using the subsystems approach, all of the genes implementing the subsystem are analyzed by an expert in that subsystem. An annotation environment was created where populated subsystems are curated and projected to new genomes. A portable notion of a populated subsystem was defined, and tools developed for exchanging and curating these objects. Tools were also developed to resolve conflicts between populated subsystems. The SEED is the first annotation environment that supports this model of annotation. Here, we describe the subsystem approach, and offer the first release of our growing library of populated subsystems. The initial release of data includes 180 177 distinct proteins with 2133 distinct functional roles. This data comes from 173 subsystems and 383 different organisms.

By means of analytical calculations and numerical simulations, we study the diffusion properties in quasi-two-dimensional structures with two exciton subsystems with an exchange between them. The experimental realization is possible in systems where fast and slow exciton subsystems appear. For substantially different diffusion coefficients of the species, the negative diffusion can be observed if one measures the transport properties of only a single subsystem, just as was obtained in experimental studies for quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor systems.

The Accessory Olfactory Bulb in : A Neuroanatomical Study in a Subterranean Mammal.

Animals (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Anatomy, Animal Production and Clinical Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary, University of Santiago de Compostela, Av. Carballo Calero s/n, 27002 Lugo, Spain.

The accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) processes chemical signals crucial for species-specific socio-sexual behaviors. There is limited information about the AOB of wild rodents, and this study aims to characterize the neurochemical organization of the AOB in the fossorial water vole (), a subterranean Cricetidae rodent. We employed histological, immunohistochemical, and lectin-histochemical techniques.

Colorectal cancer survival in Mexico: Leveraging a national health insurance database.

Cancer Epidemiol

November 2024

Center for Research on Population Health, National Institute of Public Health, Mexico City, Mexico; Department of Global Health and Population, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed 5-year survival rates for colorectal cancer patients in Mexico who were treated under Seguro Popular, a public health insurance system.
  • It involved 1418 patients diagnosed between 2013 and 2016, revealing an overall survival rate of 50% and noting that 78.1% were diagnosed at advanced stages (III and IV).
  • Findings emphasized the importance of early screening, particularly as younger patients with metastatic disease had a poorer prognosis compared to older patients.

National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Tracking and Forecasting for Infectious Diseases, National Center for Tuberculosis Control and Prevention/Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing 102206, China;Teng Chong and Diermulati·Tusun are equalled contributed to the article.

To analyze the epidemic characteristics of reported tuberculosis incidence in Kashgar from 2015 to 2022, and use the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model to predict the incidence, providing references for the local control of pulmonary tuberculosis. The reported incidence data of tuberculosis in the Kashgar area of Xinjiang from January 2015 to August 2023 were collected through the"Infectious Disease Monitoring System", a subsystem of the "Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information System". The epidemic characteristics of reported incidence in this area from 2015 to 2022 were analyzed.

The ecological environment, resource endowment, and the level of socioeconomic development vary extensively amongst regions in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). To ensure the basin's sustainable development, the supply and demand relationship of ecosystem services (ESs) within the basin was analysed from the perspective of three subsystems: flood-sediment transport, socioeconomics, and ecological environment. The supply, demand, and the ratio of supply to demand of typical ESs were initially computed for 385 counties and districts within the YRB.
