Extreme levels of bilirubin in newborn is a major cause of lifelong neurodevelopmental impairment, which places a financial burden on healthcare resources and caregivers. To determine the incidence, aetiology and short-term outcomes of extreme hyperbilirubinaemia in term infants born in a resource-limited setting. This is a retrospective observational study looking at term neonates with a birth weight ≥2500 g, born in the Western health subdistrict of Cape Town, South Africa, between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020, who were exposed to a serum bilirubin level of ≥430 μmol/L in the first week of life and received care in the public health system.

Introduction: Intrauterine transfusion is the treatment for fetal anemia resulting from maternal alloimmunization, infections (parvovirus B19 and cytomegalovirus), single demise of a monochorionic twin, chorioangioma, and other rare conditions. Fetal analgesia is mandatory to reduce movement and pain perception during the procedure. This study aims to evaluate perinatal outcomes for such procedures, following the routine use of fetal analgesia in our clinical practice.

Hb H disease is the most severe form of α-thalassemia compatible with post-natal life. Compound heterozygous α-thalassemia deletion/α-thalassemia deletion is the commonest cause of Hb H disease in Thailand. Preimplantation genetics testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M) is an alternative for couples at risk of the disorder to begin a pregnancy with a healthy baby.
