A new polymorph of di-2-pyridyl ketone 4-nitrophenylhydrazone [alternative name: N-(dipyridin-2-ylmethylene)-N'-(4-nitrophenyl)hydrazine], C17H13N5O2, isolated from the filtrate of a sonicated acetonitrile solution of dpknph and CdCl2, was found to crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/c, in contrast to the known form which crystallizes in P21/n. The non-coplanar molecules pack in parallel stacks without any intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. This packing pattern contrasts with the interlocked interdigitated packing seen in the previously known polymorph.

The initial use of 2-(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-diol (pypdH) in Mn cluster chemistry has afforded two new mixed-valence polynuclear Mn clusters, namely, [MnΟ(pypd)(hmp)(OCCMe)] () and [MnΟ(N)(pypd){(py)CO}(OCEt)] () (hmp = deprotonated 2-hydroxymethylpyridine; (py)CO = deprotonated gem-diol form of di-2-pyridyl ketone). Compound features a novel [Mn Mn(μ-O)(μ-O)(μ-OR)] structural core resembling a supertetrahedron T3, lacking two apexes, while complex has a [Mn Mn (μ-O)(μ-O)(μ-N)(μ-OR)(μ-OR)] core consisting of two [Mn] subunits related to and thus is a dimeric analogue of . Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed the presence of dominant antiferromagentic exchange interactions between the Mn ions in complexes and and small ground state spin values for both compounds.

Unusual and Persistent Free Radical Intermediate Production from 2-Pyridyl Ketones via UV Irradiation: A Direct ESR Study.

Aryl ketones are often used as photosensitizers and photoinitiators. Free radical intermediates have been suggested, but not confirmed, to be generated after photoirradiation. Here we found, unexpectedly, that a persistent radical was produced from di-2-pyridyl ketone after UV irradiation, which was detected by the direct ESR method.

Functionalizing Thiosemicarbazones for Covalent Conjugation.

Thiosemicarbazones (TSCs) with their modular character (thiosemicarbazides + carbonyl compound) allow broad variation of up to four substituents on the main RRC=N(1)-NH-C(S)-N(4)RR core and are thus interesting tools for the formation of conjugates or the functionalization of nanoparticles (NPs). In this work, di-2-pyridyl ketone was introduced for the coordination of metals and 9-anthraldehyde for luminescence as R and R to TSCs. R and R substituents were varied for the formation of conjugates.

The α-diimine-ligated Zn-Zn-bonded compound [K(THF)][LZn-ZnL] (, L = [(2,6-PrCH)NC(Me)]) displays diverse reactivities toward a variety of ketones. In the reaction of with benzophenone or 4,4'-di--butylbenzophenone, a multielectron transfer process was observed to give bimetallic (Zn/K) complexes with both ketyl radical fragments and C-C coupled pinacolate moieties (products and ). In contrast, treating with 9-fluorenone only afforded pinacolate complex .

Four Pd(II) complexes, (dpk)PdCl (complex-1), and (dpk)Pd(OAc) (complex-2) have been prepared using di(2-pyridyl) ketone as the chelate ligand (dpk). The (dpk·EtOH)PdCl (complex-3) and (dpk·EtOH)Pd(OAc) (complex-4) were synthesized by selectively introducing complex-1 and complex-2 to an EtOH in situ nucleophilic addition reaction on the O=C of the dpk ligand, respectively. All complexes were characterized using CHN-EA, UV-vis, FT-IR, FAB-MS, EDX, TGA, and NMR physicochemical tools.
