Purpose: To report two cases of pneumococcal keratitis after LASIK.
Methods: Retrospective interventional small case series of two patients who underwent bilateral LASIK for myopia and developed pneumococcal keratitis after surgery. This complication was encountered 2 days after surgery in one eye in both cases. The corneal flap was lifted, and irrigation and cultures from the stromal bed performed. Topical and subconjunctival antibiotics were started.
Results: Culture revealed Streptococcus pneumoniae in both cases. The infiltrates responded well to treatment. One year after the procedure, uncorrected visual acuity is > 20/40 in both cases.
Conclusions: Pneumococcal keratitis can complicate LASIK. Patients should be informed of this potential complication, as prompt treatment is crucial.

The role of the pneumococcal polysaccharide capsule is largely unclear for keratitis, an ocular inflammatory disease that develops as a result of bacterial infection of the cornea. In this study, capsule-deficient strains were compared to isogenic parent strains in their ability to adhere to human corneal epithelial cells. One isogenic pair was further used in topical ocular infection of mice to assess the contribution of the capsule to keratitis.

This is a case report on the use of Eckardt keratoprosthesis for pars plana vitrectomy in a patient with endophthalmitis and suppurative keratitis that developed after cataract surgery. A 79-year-old woman developed acute-onset infectious endophthalmitis and suppurative keratitis after cataract surgery that failed to respond to treatment with antibiotic eyedrops and intravitreal antibiotic injection. Using a temporary keratoprosthesis that enabled sufficient visualization, vitrectomy was performed, followed by therapeutic keratoplasty using a cryopreserved donor cornea.
