Background: Psoroptic mange, caused by Psoroptes ovis mites, is affecting Belgian Blue cattle's welfare and production potential. The Belgian Blue cattle-known for its high degree of muscling, low feed conversion ratio and high beef quality-is highly susceptible for this disease.
Results: In this study, we phenotyped 1975 Belgian Blue cattle from more than 100 different groups on commercial beef farms for their psoroptic mange susceptibility.

The solution behavior of a polyoxometalate cluster, LiNa-UPp (LiNa[(UOO)(PO)]) that consists of 24 uranyl ions, peroxide groups, and 12 pyrophosphate linkers, was successfully predicted based on new thermodynamic results using a calorimetric method recently described for uranyl peroxide nanoclusters (UPCs), molybdenum blues, and molybdenum browns. The breakdown of LiNa-UPp and formation of U (Li[UOOOH]) was monitored via Raman spectroscopy using a custom heating apparatus. A combination of analytical techniques confirmed the simultaneous existence of UPp and U midway through the conversion process and U as the single end product.

Detection of blue light (BL) via flavin-binding photoreceptors (Fl-Blues) has evolved throughout all three domains of life. Although the main BL players, that is light, oxygen and voltage (LOV), blue light sensing using flavins (BLUF) and Cry (cryptochrome) proteins, have been characterized in great detail with respect to structure and function, still several unresolved issues at different levels of complexity remain and novel unexpected findings were reported. Here, we review the most prevailing riddles of LOV-based photoreceptors, for example: the relevance of water and/or small metabolites for the dynamics of the photocycle; molecular details of light-to-signal transduction events; the interplay of BL sensing by LOV domains with other environmental stimuli, such as BL plus oxygen-mediating photodamage and its impact on microbial lifestyles; the importance of the cell or chromophore redox state in determining the fate of BL-driven reactions; the evolutionary pathways of LOV-based BL sensing and associated functions through the diverse phyla.

Methaemoglobin is the form of haemoglobin in which the iron moiety of the haem group has been oxidized from the ferrous to the ferric state. Methaemoglobinaemia is due to either an increase in the production of the oxidized haem moiety or due to decreased conversion back to the reduced form. This article presents a case of amyl nitrite-induced methaemoglobinaemia and discusses the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder.
