Article Abstract

In this paper, we present results of ATR-IR spectroscopy of uranyl complexes adsorbed on hematite. This method allowed the in situ recording of infrared spectra of uranyl sorbed on hematite in presence of aqueous solution and to detect one peak at 906 cm(-1) attributed to the antisymmetric O=U=O stretching. The intensity of the peak increases with pH, but its shape does not evolve, indicating that the same surface species is responsible for the sorption in the pH range 5-8. The reversibility experiments confirm that the hematite deposit reacts in the same way as dispersed suspensions. Measurement of the stretching frequency of nitrate ions coming from electrolyte showed a pure electrostatic adsorption and exclude the formation of a ternary complex with uranyl.

Uranium poisoning, particularly from exposure to Depleted Uranium (DU), occurs when uranyl ions enter the bloodstream and bind primarily to transferrin, osteopontin, and albumin before entering cells via corresponding receptors on renal tubular membranes, leading to cellular damage. Uranium poisoning remains a significant clinical challenge, with no ideal treatment currently available. In this study, we investigate the therapeutic potential of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell exosomes (MSC-EXs) in mice exposed to DU.

Tailored design of organic linkers or metal nodes can introduce desirable functionalities into metal-organic cages (MOCs), significantly expanding their potential applications. In this study, we present a viable approach for engineering acyl-type metal nodes to create interior oxygen-rich sites within MOCs, enabling specific recognition of metal ions, including radioactive contaminants, while maintaining the structural integrity of the MOCs. A novel MOC featuring a uranyl-sealed calix[4]resorcinarene (C[4]R)-based multisite cavity, referred to as UOC, is synthesized as a prototype.

Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) is a common sight-threatening condition characterised by pathological changes in the posterior cornea. Here we report observations by light, transmission and volume scanning electron microscopy on changes in the endothelium and matrix associated with the characteristic deformations of Descemet's membrane, termed guttae. Specimens were archived full-thickness human corneal tissue, removed during graft surgery, that had been fixed, stained and embedded by conventional processing methods for examination by transmission electron microscopy more than 40-years previously.

Widespread geogenic uranium (U) contamination of Indian groundwaters is of serious concern; yet little is known of the dominant forms and release mechanisms of U in these aquifers. Interestingly, manganese (Mn)-rich aquifers, highly buffered by dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and saturated with rhodochrosite [MnCO], have shown low U ( View Article and Find Full Text PDF

Extracting uranium from seawater is crucial for tapping oceanic resources vital to future energy supply. This study synthesized a novel nitrogen vacancy carbon nitride (NCN) grafted polyethyleneimine (PEI) composite material (NCNP). Experiments and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that NCNP effectively hinders the diffusion of uranyl ions (UO ) to the NCN surface, thereby inhibiting electron transfer reactions.
