In The Netherlands, a voluntary bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV)-free certification programme was started in 1997. After an intake procedure in which all cattle are tested for the presence of BVD virus, a herd obtains the status "BVD-virus-free". To maintain this status a monitoring procedure is executed to verify absence of BVDV circulation in the herd. Several diagnostic tests are used: RT-PCR in bulk milk and pooled blood samples, antigen-ELISA (Ag-ELISA) and antibody ELISA in individual blood samples. Sensitivity and specificity of these tests are discussed. In addition, a diagnostic quick scan has been introduced, consisting of a combination of bulk milk tests for virus and antibody, and antibody tests in samples from young stock. Preliminary results are presented.

The presence of antibiotic residues (ARs) in animal products such as milk can be an important driver of antimicrobial resistance in commensal and pathogenic bacteria. Previous studies on ARs in Nepal have demonstrated the presence of ARs in milk samples but without further characterization of the samples for risk factor analysis. This study aimed to quantify the prevalence and risk factors for the presence of ARs in 140 peri-urban dairy farms in Kathmandu, Nepal, included in a cross-sectional survey in 2019 to estimate farm-level AR prevalence.

The microencapsulation via freeze drying of flaxseed oil in cow and mare milk was analyzed. The physicochemical and nutritional properties of the four obtained freeze-dried powder products were comparatively analyzed: microencapsulated and fortified with flaxseed oil cow milk (CMFO) and mare milk (MMFO), as well as pure cow milk (CM) and pure mare milk (MM). The moisture content, water activity, particle size distribution (PSD), loose and tapped bulk densities, flowability, color, and fatty acid profiles of the freeze-dried powders as well as the PSD of reconstituted emulsion droplets were investigated.

This research investigated the influence of the microencapsulation of phenolic compounds (PCs) from organic coffee husk with whey protein concentrate (WPC) and maltodextrin on the abundance of intestinal bacterial populations and their metabolic activity during in vitro fecal fermentation. The microencapsulated PCs were gradually metabolized during fecal fermentation, resulting in significant transformations and an increase in PCs in the fermentation media. The metabolism of PCs by the fecal microbiota occurred concurrently with the consumption of sugars, production of organic acids, and reduction in pH in the media.

Purpose: Anemia during pregnancy can lead to physical and cognitive impairments, fatigue, and postpartum depression. Dietary fiber, as a prebiotic, supports gut health by producing short-chain fatty acids, which enhance immunity and aid iron absorption. This study investigates the impact of fiber supplementation on hemoglobin and reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (RET-He) levels in anemic pregnant women receiving oral iron therapy.
