Objective: To investigate the levels of blood pressure and serum lipids, and examine the relationship between hypertension and hyperlipidemia in Hei Yi Zhuang Chinese living in Guangxi.

Methods: A total of 1056 people of Hei Yi Zhuang ethnicity were studied. Blood pressure, body height, body weight, and serum levels of lipids and apolipoprotein were measured. The data were compared with those in 925 people of Han ethnicity, who live in the same region.

Results: Systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure were significantly higher in Hei Yi Zhuang than Han Chinese (P < 0.001). The prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension and hypertension was also significantly higher in Hei Yi Zhuang than Han Chinese (P < 0.001). Serum concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and apolipoprotein (Apo) B, and the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia were significantly lower in Hei Yi Zhuang than Han Chinese (P < 0.05). Serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the Apo A1 to Apo B ratio were significantly higher in Hei Yi Zhuang than Han Chinese (P < 0.001). The prevalence of hypertension in Hei Yi Zhuang Chinese was positively associated with triglycerides (r = 0.425, P < 0.05), whereas the prevalence of hypertension in Han Chinese was positively correlated with total cholesterol (r = 0.623, P < 0.001).

Conclusion: The present study revealed a significant difference in blood pressure and serum lipids between Hei Yi Zhuang and Han ethnic groups, and an association between hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

The role of the interplay between macrophage glycolytic reprogramming and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Clin Transl Med

Department of Extracorporeal Circulation and Mechanical Circulation Assistants, Center for Cardiac Intensive Care, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe respiratory condition associated with elevated morbidity and mortality. Understanding their complex pathophysiological mechanisms is crucial for developing new preventive and therapeutic strategies. Recent studies highlight the significant role of inflammation involved in ALI/ARDS, particularly the hyperactivation of the NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain-associated protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in macrophages.

Suppression of Structural Heterogeneity in High-Entropy Intermetallics for Electrocatalytic Upgrading of Waste Plastics.

The key to fully realizing the potential of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) lies in balancing their inherent local chemical disordering with the long-range ordering required for electrochemical applications. Herein, we synthesized a distinctive L1-(PtIr)(FeMoBi) high-entropy intermetallics (HEIs) exhibiting nanoscale long-range order and atomic scale short-range disorder via a lattice compensation strategy to mitigate the entropy reduction tendency. The (PtIr)(FeMoBi) catalyst exhibited remarkable activity and selectivity of glycollic acid (GA) production via electrocatalytic waste polymer-derived ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the neonatal outcomes of preterm infants (24-31 weeks gestational age) in 57 hospitals across China, focusing on how birth weight for gestational age affects health risks.
  • It included 8,380 infants, finding that lower birth weight was linked to higher risks of serious health issues like mortality, necrotizing enterocolitis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
  • The research concluded that infants with birth weights below the 30th percentile face significantly higher risks for adverse outcomes, highlighting the need for close monitoring and early intervention for these vulnerable infants.

Background: Dexmedetomidine is considered to have neuroprotective effects and may reduce postoperative delirium in both cardiac and major non-cardiac surgeries. Compared with non-cardiac surgery, the delirium incidence is extremely high after cardiac surgery, which could be caused by neuroinflammation induced by surgical stress and CPB. Thus, it is essential to explore the potential benefits of dexmedetomidine on the incidence of delirium in cardiac surgery under CPB.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of early antibiotic exposure on the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in very preterm infants (VPIs) at low risk for early-onset sepsis (EOS).
  • It uses data from a national cohort in China, focusing on VPIs born between January 2019 and December 2021, and categorizes them based on the duration of antibiotic exposure during their first week of life.
  • The results reveal that among the 6510 VPIs at low risk for EOS, the majority received antibiotics for 5 to 7 days, highlighting a need to explore the relationship between such exposure and the incidence of BPD or mortality as they age.
