Objective: To explore the possible factors causing the increase of rabies cases and to provide references for the development of related prevention and control strategy in Hunan.

Methods: Data was collected and analyzed on epidemic situation of rabies in the past ten years, and studies were carried in some counties.

Results: From 1994 to 1999, the annual cases sustained between 17 and 78. However, the number of cases has continued to increase since 2000. The annual reported cases in 2001 and 2002 were 311 and 313, and accounted for 34.8% and 30.0% of the total cases in the whole country respectively. The epidemic areas were mainly located in the south and middle parts of Hunan. Furthermore, the epidemic areas had been expanding. In 1997, human rabies cases were only reported in 7 cities but increased to 12 cities in 2004.

Conclusion: Factors as increasing number but low inoculating rate to dogs, and incorrect treatment on the wounds etc. might have served important roles for the recurrence of rabies. Hence, it is necessary to take comprehensive preventive measures to control and prevent the epidemics of rabies in Hunan.

Rabies is an acute lethal disease causing by the neurotropic virus rabies virus (RABV). Rabies immune globulin (RIG) as an indispensable component of rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) always faces with great challenges in terms of costs, stability and safety. Our objective is to develop a novel and potential fully human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) cocktail for the improvement of rabies PEP.

Article Synopsis
  • - Human rabies is a serious public health issue in China, with a significant study analyzing data from 2004 to 2020 across 31 provinces to understand its spatiotemporal characteristics and influencing factors.
  • - The study found a total of 26,807 rabies cases with peak incidence in 2007, showing a general decline to 2020, though some provinces like Hunan, Henan, and Jiangsu saw an increase in risk.
  • - The risk of human rabies is affected by environmental factors, such as rising temperatures and increased sunshine duration, while higher incomes and healthcare spending help reduce risk; recommendations include boosting investments in rabies prevention, especially in regions with higher risks.

Neurotropic viruses have been implicated in altering the central nervous system microenvironment and promoting brain metastasis of breast cancer through complex interactions involving viral entry mechanisms, modulation of the blood-brain barrier, immune evasion, and alteration of the tumour microenvironment. This narrative review explores the molecular mechanisms by which neurotropic viruses such as Herpes Simplex Virus, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Japanese Encephalitis Virus, and Rabies Virus facilitate brain metastasis, focusing on their ability to disrupt blood-brain barrier integrity, modulate immune responses, and create a permissive environment for metastatic cell survival and growth within the central nervous system. Current therapeutic implications and challenges in targeting neurotropic viruses to prevent or treat brain metastasis are discussed, highlighting the need for innovative strategies and multidisciplinary approaches in virology, oncology, and immunology.

Spatial-temporal distribution of neglected tropical diseases burdens in China from 2005 to 2020.

Infect Dis Poverty

September 2024

NHC Key Laboratory of Tropical Disease Control, School of Tropical Medicine, the First Affiliated Hospital, Hainan Medical University, Haikou, 571199, Hainan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on assessing the burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in China from 2005 to 2020, revealing significant progress in controlling these diseases despite a lack of comprehensive data on their distribution and impact.
  • Analysis shows a dramatic reduction in the overall NTD burden, with DALYs decreasing from over 245,000 in 2005 to about 18,000 in 2020, primarily driven by declines in schistosomiasis and rabies.
  • The research highlights specific regions, like Sichuan and Hunan, that experienced high diversity and burden of NTDs, emphasizing the need for targeted national health strategies and resource allocation.

Background: Pharmacotherapy constitutes the first-line treatment for depression. However, its clinical use is hindered by several limitations, such as time lag, side effects, and narrow therapeutic windows. Nanotechnology can be employed to shorten the onset time by ensuring permeation across the blood brain barrier (BBB) to precisely deliver more therapeutic agents; unfortunately, formidable challenges owing to the intrinsic shortcomings of commercial drugs remain.
