Background: Neonatal mortality due to tetanus persists in Uganda despite the mandatory vaccination of pregnant mothers. Maternal antibodies wane within a year. Uganda's maternal vaccination guidelines do not specify the timing or frequency of tetanus shots, contributing to suboptimal transfer of tetanus antibodies to neonates.

Background: The pentavalent DTwP-HB-Hib (Shan-5) vaccine was first introduced into the Thailand Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in 2019. The Shan-5 vaccine is administered to infants at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, after initial vaccination with monovalent hepatitis B (HepB) and Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccines at birth. This study compared the immunogenicity of the HepB, diphtheria, tetanus, and Bordetella pertussis antigens incorporated in the EPI Shan-5 vaccine versus the optional pentavalent (DTwP-HB-Hib) Quinvaxem and hexavalent (DTaP-HB-Hib-IPV) Infanrix-hexa vaccine.

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants are a rapidly expanding population in sub-Saharan Africa and are highly susceptible to encapsulated bacterial disease in the first year of life. We previously examined the safety and immunogenicity of multiple vaccines administered to a military cohort, divided into two groups, the first composed of students at military schools, thus operating inside the national borders for at least 3 years, and the other formed of soldiers periodically engaged in a 9-month-long mission abroad (Lebanon). In the current study, we analyzed 112 individuals of this cohort, 50 pertaining to the first group and 62 to the second group, in order to examine the possible late appearance of side effects and to calculate the half-life of the induced antibodies. Moreover, the possible involvement of B-cell polyclonal activation as a pathogenetic mechanism for long term antibody persistence has even been explored.
