The complex between adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and 4-guanidinobutyric acid (GBA) has been studied by infrared spectroscopy dry and hydrated (60% relative humidity). Partial nonenzymic hydrolysis has been detected, as deduced from characteristic bands of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic orthophosphate formation. An infrared continuum, which increases upon hydration, demonstrates that the hydrogen bonded system in this complex has a large proton polarizability due to collective proton fluctuation. On this basis, a mechanism for splitting of lytic water molecules is also discussed.

Dietary intake, specifically consumption of anti-inflammatory micronutrients, can play a role in both cancer initiation as well as the treatment-related outcomes experienced by patients receiving systemic cancer therapy. Increasing research is being conducted to determine whether micronutrient supplementation can aid in altering the tumor microenvironment (TME), reducing inflammatory side effects and immune-related adverse events (irAEs). However, further research pertaining to the adequacy of dietary micronutrient intake is indicated in the oncology cohort.

Ribonucleotide:protein interactions play crucial roles in a number of biological processes. Unlike the RNA:protein interface where van der Waals contacts are prevalent, the recognition of a single ribonucleotide such as ATP by a protein occurs predominantly through hydrogen-bonding interactions. As a first step toward understanding the role of hydrogen bonding in ribonucleotide:protein recognition, the present work employs density functional theory to provide a detailed quantum-mechanical analysis of the structural and energetic characteristics of 18 unique hydrogen-bonded pairs involving the nucleobase/nucleoside moiety of four canonical ribonucleotides and the side chains of three polar amino-acid residues (arginine, glutamine, and glutamic acid) of proteins.
