Chemical investigation of the ascidian Aplidium aff. densum collected at Masirah Island, Oman, has resulted in the isolation of five meroterpenes: two new ones, methoxyconidiol (1) and didehydroconicol (2), and three related, known compounds, 3-5. The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by a combination of mass spectrometry and one- and two-dimensional high-field NMR techniques. Their biological activities against bacteria and human lymphoblastic cell lines were evaluated.

Marine aquaculture as a source of propagules of invasive fouling species.

PeerJ

June 2023

Zoology Department, Universidade Federal do Paraná, Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.

Non-indigenous species tend to colonize aquaculture installations, especially when they are near international ports. In addition to the local environmental hazard that colonizing non-indigenous species pose, they can also take advantage of local transport opportunities to spread elsewhere. In this study, we examined the risk of the spread of eight invasive fouling species that are found in mussel farms in southern Brazil.

Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) has become an attractive target for the treatment of diabetes. Compound I is an indole-based GSK-3β inhibitor designed from the Meridianin C, a marine natural product (MNP) isolated from Aplidium meridianum. However, this compound has a moderate inhibitory activity toward GSK-3β (IC = 24.

Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) is a widely investigated molecular target for numerous diseases, and inhibition of GSK-3β activity has become an attractive approach for the treatment of diabetes. Meridianin C, an indole-based natural product isolated from marine , has been reported as a potent GSK-3β inhibitor. In the present study, applying the structural-based optimization strategy, the pyrimidine group of meridianin C was modified by introducing different substituents based on the 2-aminopyrimidines-substituted pyrazolo pyridazine scaffold.

During the 2013 Singapore Strait International Marine Biodiversity Workshop, hundreds of ascidians were collected along with numerous other marine phyla. Collections were made intertidally as well as subtidally by snorkel, SCUBA, trawling and dredging. While many ascidian specimens remain unidentified, 14 aplousobranchs, nine phlebobranchs and 17 stolidobranchs have been identified; a surprising 50% of these comprise 20 new records for Singapore.
