A combination of gold nanoparticles and laser photobiomodulation to boost antioxidant defenses in the recovery of muscle injuries caused by Bothrops jararaca venom.

Lasers Med Sci

January 2025

Laboratory of Pathophysiology Experimental, Postgraduate Program in Health Sciences, Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense (UNESC), Criciúma, SC, Brazil.

Unlabelled: This study aimed to evaluate gold nanoparticles (GNPs) and photobiomodulation (PBM), associated with antibothropic serum (AS), to treat a muscle lesion induced by Bothrops jararaca venom.

Methods: 108 Swiss male mice were used, divided into nine groups (n = 12) with different combinations of treatments. Animals were inoculated with 250 µg of B.

Article Synopsis
  • Anlotinib has demonstrated positive effects in treating platinum-resistant ovarian cancer, but its role as a maintenance therapy after initial treatment was unclear.
  • In a phase II clinical trial with 24 patients, those who received anlotinib after responding to chemotherapy had a median progression-free survival of 15.8 months and an overall survival of 43.8 months.
  • The study indicated that anlotinib is a safe and effective option for maintenance therapy, showing promise in extending survival for patients with advanced ovarian cancer.

Purpose: Therapeutic options for patients with brain metastases (BM) increase. While these lead to considerable survival effects in subgroups, there is limited knowledge about characteristics, prognosticators and treatment effects in patients with BM and short survival.

Methods: Patients with a survival time of ≤ 6 months (short-term survivors, STS), diagnosed with BM between 2009-2021 at a large tertiary cancer center were analysed.

Current Practices and Trends of Plastic and Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons in Canada.

Plast Surg (Oakv)

February 2025

Department of Surgery, Division of Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery, The Ottawa Hospital, Ottawa, ON, Canada.

There is a lack of previous studies investigating oncoplastic practice trends for breast reconstruction in Canada, particularly from the plastic surgeon perspective. Given the rising popularity of oncoplastic techniques, this study aimed to identify current practice trends for breast and plastic surgeons in Canada. A cross-sectional survey study of breast and plastic surgeons performing oncoplastic surgery across Canada was conducted.

The design of photobioreactors for microalgae cultivation aims to achieve an architecture that allows the most efficient photosynthetic growth. The availability of light at wavelengths that are important for photosynthesis is therefore particularly crucial for reactor design. While testing different reactor types in practice is expensive, simulations could effectively limit the range of material and reactor design options.
