The complete nucleotide sequence (21,359 bp) of the mitochondrial DNA of the rhacophorid frog Rhacophorus schlegelii was determined. The gene content, nucleotide composition, and codon usage of this genome corresponded to those typical of vertebrates. However, the Rh. schlegelii genome was unusually large due to the inclusion of two control regions and the accumulation of lengthy repetitive sequences in these regions. The two control regions had 97% sequence similarity over 1,510 bp, suggesting the occurrence of concerted sequence evolution. Comparison of the gene organizations among anuran species revealed that the mitochondrial gene arrangement of Rh. schlegelii diverged from that of typical vertebrates but was similar to that of Buergeria buergeri. The positions of the tRNA-Leu(CUN) and tRNA-Thr genes were exchanged between Rh. schlegelii and B. buergeri. Based on parsimonious consideration and the basal phylogenetic position of B. buergeri, these genes seemed to have been rearranged in an ancestral lineage leading to Rh. schlegelii.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of IL-35 on the prognosis of patients with HBV-ACLF. We recruited 69 patients with HBV-ACLF, 20 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), 17 patients with liver cirrhosis (LC), and 20 healthy controls (HCs) from a regional infectious disease treatment center in China. Plasma levels of IL-35 at baseline were detected using ELISA.

A historical perspective of more than one hundred years of influenza surveillance in New York State demonstrates the progression from anecdotes and case counts to next-generation sequencing and electronic database management, greatly improving pandemic preparedness and response. Here, we determined if influenza virologic surveillance at the New York State public health laboratory (NYS PHL) tests sufficient specimen numbers within preferred confidence limits to assess situational awareness and detect novel viruses that pose a pandemic risk. To this end, we analyzed retrospective electronic data on laboratory test results for the influenza seasons 1997-1998 to 2021-2022 according to sample sizes recommended in the Influenza Virologic Surveillance Right Size Roadmap issued by the Association of Public Health Laboratories and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Arthropod-borne viral diseases are acute febrile illnesses, sometimes with chronic effects, that can be debilitating and even fatal worldwide, affecting particularly vulnerable populations. Indigenous communities face not only the burden of these acute febrile illnesses, but also the cardiovascular complications that are worsened by urbanization. A cross-sectional study was conducted in an Indigenous population in the Northeast Region of Brazil to explore the association between arboviral infections (dengue, chikungunya, and Zika) and cardiac biomarkers, including cardiotrophin 1, growth differentiation factor 15, lactate dehydrogenase B, fatty-acid-binding protein 3, myoglobin, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, cardiac troponin I, big endothelin 1, and creatine kinase-MB, along with clinical and anthropometric factors.
