Objective: Description of the general characteristics of patients with Diffuse Chronic Hepatopathy (DCH) in an ABS.

Design: Empirical study of a prospective and retrospective type. Site. Primary Care. ABS La Mina. Sant Adrià de Besòs.

Patients And Other Participants: All patients diagnosed as suffering DCH since 1984, in line with histological or clinical--morphological criteria accepted in the literature.

Main Measurements And Results: Using a data base of the centre's morbidity and mortality register, 287 reports of patients over 14 years old defined as having DCH were examined. 222 cases met the established criteria. Most of these were males (68%), and to an even higher proportion in the group with alcoholic etiology (84%), which was the most common cause of DCH (64.4%). There was a lower number of complications and deaths attributable to DCH than in published hospital series.

Conclusions: Among the characteristics of DCH in a natural population using the health services, it is important to note the predominance of compensated forms having a rate of complications and deaths attributable to DCH significantly lower than what was observed in hospital series. This information may be of use in planning activities at the ABS level.

Minimal change disease (MCD) accounts for 10 - 15% of idiopathic nephrotic syndromes in adults. Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is rarely ascribed as a cause of MCD and was previously associated with interferon-based therapy. MCD in treatment-naïve chronic HCV infection is extremely rare, with only 3 cases reported in the literature.

A 50-year-old patient with a prior history of chronic smoking presented to the emergency department with diffuse abdominal pain, primarily localized to the right hypochondrium and epigastric region, along with nausea, but without fever, vomiting, or urinary symptoms. Laboratory tests were largely unremarkable except for isolated hematuria and a mildly elevated CRP. Given the atypical clinical presentation, a 3-phase abdominal CT scan (without contrast, portal, and delayed phases) was conducted, revealing a horseshoe kidney with an obstructing 4 mm stone at the right ureteral meatus.

Genetic and clinical spectrum of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome with nuclear pore gene mutation.

Pediatr Nephrol

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, Wuhan Children's Hospital (Wuhan Maternal and Child Healthcare Center), Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science & Technology, Wuhan, China.

Background: Steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) is insensitive to steroid therapy and overwhelmingly progresses to kidney failure (KF), the known pathogenic genes of which include key subunits of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), a less-recognized contributor to glomerular podocyte injury.

Methods: After analyzing their clinical characterizations and obtaining parental consent, whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed on patients with SRNS. Several nucleoporin (NUP) biallelic pathogenic variants were identified and further analyzed by cDNA-PCR sequencing from white cells of peripheral blood, minigene assay, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining, and electron microscopy (EM) ultrastructure observation of kidney biopsy, as well as multiple in silico prediction tools, including 3D protein modeling.

School of Nursing and Division of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine, Columbia University, New York, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Objective: To evaluate associations between brain structure/function with physical function and functional capacity in older adults with CKD and cognitive complaints.

Methods: We evaluated associations between neuroimaging and cognitive function with functional capacity and physical function in older adults (60-80years) with CKD and cognitive complaints (n = 39; age 67.6 years).

Ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory condition of the colon, requires precise and targeted treatment, and polysaccharides, with their pH responsiveness and biodegradability, offer an innovative approach for colon-specific drug delivery. This study aims to develop a highly precise drug delivery system with enhanced therapeutic and targeting efficiency for ulcerative colitis, focusing on the preparation, optimisation, and evaluation of dual cross-linked mesalamine-loaded sericin-pectin (DSPs) micro-beads. These beads utilise the pH-responsive and microflora biodegradability properties of polysaccharides for targeted colon delivery, employing the Response Surface Methodology.
