Introduction: In our article we describe the breast screening program running in our hospital since January 2001. We analyse the operations related to the screening. We describe the invasive and noninvasive diagnosis and treatment of non-palpable breast tumors.
Patients And Method: Between 01.01.2001 and 31.10.2004 156 breast operations were performed because of 71 benign and 85 malignant lesions. Thirteen non-palpable breast tumors (7 malignant, 6 benign) were localised preoperative with hooked wire, specimen mammography and ultrasound examination carried out. In 3 patients with malignant lesions intraoperative frozen sections were performed (one false positive and two false negative). In 3 patients fine needle aspiration was performed and 2 patients only low cell and cell free results were obtained.
Discussion: We think that in the treatment of non-palpable breast tumors surgical intervention has primary role, for which we receive help from mammography or ultrasound localisation, and specimen examinations.
