Occurrence of macrolides resistance in Legionella pneumophila ST188: results of the Belgian epidemiology and resistome investigation of clinical isolates.

Int J Infect Dis

January 2025

National reference centre for Legionella pneumophila, Department of Microbiology, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel (UZ Brussel), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Laarbeeklaan 101, 1090 Brussels, Belgium.

Introduction: The incidence of Legionnaires' disease (LD) steadily increases worldwide. Although Legionella pneumophila is known as pathogenic, systematic investigations into antibiotic resistance are scarce, and reports of resistance in isolates are recently emerging.

Methods: Clinical cases and metadata reported to the Belgian National Reference Centre between 2011 and 2022 were retrospectively analysed.

Detection of O25b-ST131 clone in extended spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli from urinary tract infections in Mexico.

J Infect Dev Ctries

December 2024

Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública (INSP), Centro de Investigación Sobre Enfermedades Infecciosas (CISEI), Departamento de Diagnóstico Epidemiológico. Cuernavaca, Morelos, México.

Introduction: Escherichia coli has emerged as an important pathogen in urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to the rapid acquisition of antibiotic resistance genes. This enhances the ability of E. coli to colonize and creates therapeutic challenges within the healthcare system.

Plasma myeloperoxidase interactions with cadmium, lead, arsenic, and selenium and their impact on chronic kidney disease.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

January 2025

Department of Public Health, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Family Medicine, Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an oxidative stress biomarker, with elevated MPO levels linked to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. Metal exposure is a risk factor for CKD, and is also correlated to MPO expression, with specific MPO genotypes linked to MPO expression. Therefore, we examined whether MPO plasma levels or MPO polymorphisms were linked to CKD, and explored whether these factors modified associations between CKD and metal concentrations.

Department of Endocrinology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, No. 678 Furong Road, Jingkai District, Hefei 230601, Anhui Province, China; Research Center for Translational Medicine, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, No. 678 Furong Road, Jingkai District, Hefei 230601, Anhui Province, China. Electronic address:

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD), a microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, represents a significant clinical challenge. This study investigated the reno-protective effects of dulaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) widely used in the management of diabetes, and aimed to elucidate its underlying mechanisms. Mice with db/db and db/m genotypes were allocated into four experimental groups and treated with either dulaglutide or a saline control for 10 weeks.

Clinical and molecular analysis of ESBL, carbapenemase, and colistin-resistant bacteria in UTI patients.

Jiangxi Key Laboratory of Oncology (2024SSY06041), Jiangxi Cancer Hospital & Institute, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang Medical College, Nanchang, Jiangxi, 330029, P.R. China.

Uropathogens, particularly bacteria, can infect any part of the urinary tract and cause bacteriuria. Our study aimed to examine the antibiotic-resistant profile, associated risk factors, and phenotypic and genotypic features of ESBL, carbapenemase, and mcr resistance genes in multidrug-resistant bacteria. Samples were inoculated on culture media, identified using standard biochemical tests, and species confirmation was performed via 16S rRNA gene amplification.
