Aim: To examine the efficacy of current non-servo-based cooling methods used by NETS NSW in treating hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) with therapeutic hypothermia (TH) in neonatal retrieval.
Methods: A retrospective observational study of infants treated with TH for HIE retrieved by NETS NSW from January 2017 to June 2020 inclusive. Primary outcomes were the proportion of neonates achieving TH within 6 h of life and maintaining temperature in a therapeutic range.

Objective: A meta-analysis of case-control studies was conducted to assess the risk of birth defects in offspring in China associated with maternal active and passive smoking and paternal smoking.
Methods: Four electronic databases were searched for qualified research up to December 2023. A Random-effect model or fixed-effect model was used to calculate the overall comprehensive risk estimates; and the relationship between parental smoking and the risk of birth defects in different periods of pregnancy.

Viruses are the most common congenital infections in humans and an important cause of foetal malformations, neonatal morbidity, and mortality. The effects of these infections, which are transmitted in utero (transplacentally), during childbirth or in the puerperium depend on the timing of the infections. These vary from miscarriages (usually with infections in very early pregnancy), congenital malformations (when the infections occur during organogenesis) and morbidity (with infections occurring late in pregnancy, during childbirth or after delivery).

Objectives: To explore the associations of parental smoking and alcohol consumption during the periconceptional period and their interactions with risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) in offspring.
Methods: The parents of children with simple CHD aged 0 to 1 year (=683) were recruited as the case group, while the parents of healthy children aged 0 to 1 year (=740) served as the control group. A case-control study was conducted, and a questionnaire was used to collect information on perinatal exposures.

During pregnancy, the mother's IgG immunoglobulins cross the -placenta via the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), enabling the fetus to acquire passive immunity. In the presence of maternal allo- or auto-antibodies, placental transfer of these pathogenic antibodies mediated by FcRn can cause diseases in the fetus and/or the newborn. FcRn blockade therefore appears to be a therapeutic strategy in these high-risk pregnancies, firstly by reducing IgG recycling, -thereby reducing its concentration in the maternal circulation, and secondly by blocking placental transfer.
