Samples of Mytilus galloprovincialis collected in different sites of the Venice lagoon (Italy) were investigated for total arsenic concentrations by ICP-AES and for single arsenic species by HPLC-ICP-MS. For this purpose, an analytical procedure for the sensitive and efficient speciation of the arsenic species As(III), As(V), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), arsenobetaine (AB), arsenocholine (AC), and four arsenosugars was optimised. The total arsenic and the single arsenic species were determined in both the hepatopancreas (digestive gland) and the remaining soft tissues in order to verify the different arsenic accumulation in the body parts of mussels. Arsenic compounds were extracted from the mussels with a methanol/water mixture; the extracts were evaporated to dryness, redissolved in water, and chromatographed in an anion-exchange column, a Hamilton PRP-X100. Only small quantities or traces of inorganic arsenic were detected in the mussels. The majority of arsenic compounds detected in the extracts were organic species, with a predominance of arsenobetaine and of an arsenosugar. In addition, a greater arsenic accumulation in the digestive glands of mussels was observed.

Disentangling the role of selenium in antagonizing the toxicity of arsenic and cadmium.

Cadmium (Cd) and inorganic arsenic (As) compounds are considered to be among the major public health hazards. This is due to both the high intrinsic toxicity of these substances and the often difficult to avoid exposure of the general population through contaminated water and food. One proposed method to reduce the toxic effects of As and Cd on animals and humans is the use of selenium (Se).

Synthesis and Redox Chemistry of Co3E4 (E = P, As) Clusters.

Chemistry

January 2025

University of Regensburg, Inorganic Chemistry, Universitätsstrasse 31, D-93040, Regensburg, GERMANY.

The synthesis of the cluster complexes [(Cp'''Co)3(µ3,η2:η2:η2-E3)(µ3-E)] (E = P (3), As (4)) starting from the anionic triple-decker complexes [K(18cr6)(dme)2][(Cp'''Co)2(µ,η4:η4-E4)]- (E = P (1), As (2)) by electrophilic quenching with the Co dimer [(Cp'''CoCl)2] is reported. Both complexes show a distinct redox chemistry, which was first investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Subsequently, the monoanions [K(L)(sol)n][(Cp'''Co)3(µ3,η2:η2:η2-E3)(µ3-E)] (E = P, L = 18cr6, sol = dme, n = 2 (5), E = As, L = 2,2,2-crypt, n = 0 (6)), the monocations [(Cp'''Co)3(µ3,η2:η2:η2-E3)(µ3-E)][FAl] (E = P (7), As (8)) and the dications [(Cp'''Co)3(µ3,η3:η3:η3-E4)][TEF]2 (E = P (9), As (10)) could be realized experimentally and isolated in moderate to good yields.

The main aim of the study was to develop new fruit waste-derived activated carbons of high adsorption performance towards metals, metalloids, and polymers by the use of carbon dioxide (CO)-consuming, microwave-assisted activation. The authors compared morphology, surface chemistry, textural parameters, and elemental composition of precursors (chokeberry seeds, black currant seeds, orange peels), as well as biochars (BCs) and activated carbons (ACs) obtained from them. The adsorption mechanisms of metals (copper, cadmium), metalloids (arsenic, selenium), and macromolecular compounds (bacterial exopolysaccharide, ionic polyacrylamides) on the surface of selected materials were investigated in one- and two-component systems.

Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) is a chronic, multifactorial, and progressive neurodegenerative disease that associates with aging and is highly prevalent in our older population (≥65 years of age). This hypothesis generating this narrative review will examine the important role for the use of sodium thiosulfate (STS) as a possible multi-targeting treatment option for LOAD. Sulfur is widely available in our environment and is responsible for forming organosulfur compounds that are known to be associated with a wide range of biological activities in the brain.

Harnessing Arsenic Derivatives and Natural Agents for Enhanced Glioblastoma Therapy.

Cells

December 2024

Laboratory of Pharmacotherapy, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Josai University, Keyakidai, Sakado 350-0295, Saitama, Japan.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and lethal intracranial tumor in adults. Despite advances in the understanding of the molecular events responsible for disease development and progression, survival rates and mortality statistics for GBM patients have been virtually unchanged for decades and chemotherapeutic drugs used to treat GBM are limited. Arsenic derivatives, known as highly effective anticancer agents for leukemia therapy, has been demonstrated to exhibit cytocidal effects toward GBM cells by inducing cell death, cell cycle arrest, inhibition of migration/invasion, and angiogenesis.
