Published: July 2005

Objective: To provide new evidences for the identification of Herpetospermum pedunculosum seeds and other substitutes.

Method: Microscopic examination of the cross sections and powers of the seeds of H. pedunculosum, Momordica charantia, Thladiantha setispina and M. cohinchinensis were made to characterize the drug materials.

Result And Conclusion: The external and internal structure of T. setispina and M. charantia were studied for the first time. Two types of different branched starry sclereids was found in M. cohinchinensis. Comparative studies on external and internal structure were carried out on seeds of the 4 species. As a result, they could be distinguished by external characteristics such as shape, size and color of their seeds, and by internal structure such as size and type of sclereid, epidermis and sub-epidermis cell of seed coat.

Braun School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Hadassah Medical Organization, Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

Background: Quality of care can be measured in several dimensions: different clinical disciplines, structures/processes/outcomes of care (SPO), and also different domains of quality (effectiveness, safety, care coordination, patient-centeredness, efficiency, timeliness, and community/population health). To our knowledge, no previous study has compared different sets of performance measures in terms of how well they cover these different aspects of quality.

Objective: Compare the content coverage of major quality measure sets from Israel, the US, and the UK.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible age-related neurodegenerative condition characterized by the deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides and neurofibrillary tangles. Di Huang Yi Zhi (DHYZ) formula, a traditional Chinese herbal compound comprising several prescriptions, demonstrates properties that improve cognitive abilities in clinical. Nonetheless, its molecular mechanisms on treating AD through improving neuron cells mitochondria function have not been deeply investigated.

Sulfonylureas (SU) are commonly prescribed as oral hypoglycemic agents for the management of diabetes mellitus (DM). We postulated that SU possess antimicrobial properties due to their structural resemblance to the antimicrobial agent sulfamethoxazole. Using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we enrolled patients diagnosed with DM between 2000 and 2013 and followed them for a three-year period.
