Cardiac vagal control and inflammation are upregulated in exceptional human longevity.

Intern Emerg Med

Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health, University of Milan, via Francesco Sforza 35, 20122, Milan, Italy.

We investigated the interplay of cardiovascular autonomic and inflammatory profiles in persons with extreme longevity (PEL), their direct offsprings (DO), and a group of controls matched for age and sex with the DO. Cardiac autonomic control was assessed through the heart rate variability (HRV) using spectral and symbolic analysis. The plasma concentration and gene expression of interleukin (IL)-10, IL-6, and TNF-α were quantified.

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is one of the cytokines found to be multifunctional and biologically effective, regulating immune and inflammatory response by interacting with receptors to transmit signals. In this study, the full-length cDNAs of IL-6 (named as NaIL-6) and its receptors IL-6R and gp130 (named as NaIL-6Rα and NaIL-6Rβ) of Nibea albiflora were acquired and they possessed the typical symbolic motifs similar to its teleost orthologues in multiple sequence comparisons. The phylogenetic trees showed that NaIL-6 and its receptors clustered with their counterparts in bony fish, and had the closest affinity to Larimichthys crocea.

Cognitive benefits of folic acid supplementation during pregnancy track with epigenetic changes at an imprint regulator.

School of Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, Ulster University, Coleraine, Northern Ireland, BT52 1SA, UK.

Background: The human ZFP57 gene is a major regulator of imprinted genes, maintaining DNA methylation marks that distinguish parent-of-origin-specific alleles. DNA methylation of the gene itself has shown sensitivity to environmental stimuli, particularly folate status. However, the role of DNA methylation in ZFP57's own regulation has not been fully investigated.

Many biological and medical questions can be modeled using time-to-event data in finite-state Markov chains, with the phase-type distribution describing intervals between events. We solve the inverse problem: given a phase-type distribution, can we identify the transition rate parameters of the underlying Markov chain? For a specific class of solvable Markov models, we show this problem has a unique solution up to finite symmetry transformations, and we outline a recursive method for computing symbolic solutions for these models across any number of states. Using the Thomas decomposition technique from computer algebra, we further provide symbolic solutions for any model.
