Restenosis remains a long-standing limitation to effectively maintain functional blood flow after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). While the use of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) containing antiproliferative drugs has improved patient outcomes, limited tissue transfer and poor therapeutic targeting capabilities contribute to off-target cytotoxicity, precluding adequate endothelial repair. In this work, a DCB system was designed and tested to achieve defined arterial delivery of an antirestenosis therapeutic candidate, cadherin-2 (N-cadherin) mimetic peptides (NCad), shown to selectively inhibit smooth muscle cell migration and limit intimal thickening in early animal PTA models.

MiRNAs: main players of cancer drug resistance target ABC transporters.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

January 2025

Solid Tumor Research Center, Cellular and Molecular Medicine Research Institute, Urmia University of Medical Sciences, Urmia, Iran.

Chemotherapy remains the cornerstone of cancer treatment; however, its efficacy is frequently compromised by the development of chemoresistance. Multidrug resistance (MDR), characterized by the refractoriness of cancer cells to a wide array of chemotherapeutic agents, presents a significant barrier to achieving successful and sustained cancer remission. One critical factor contributing to this chemoresistance is the overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters.

Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of split-thickness amniotic membrane (SAM) grafts in achieving closure of refractory or large macular holes (MH).

Methods: This retrospective study reviewed data from patients who underwent surgical repair of MHs using SAM grafts between January 2019 and December 2023. Key parameters, including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and MH size, were evaluated both preoperatively and postoperatively.

Genome engineering with Cas9 and AAV repair templates, successes and pitfalls.

Mamm Genome

January 2025

CNRS, INSERM, CELPHEDIA, Institut Clinique de la Souris (ICS), Université de Strasbourg, Illkirch, PHENOMIN, France.

Genome editing, in particular the CRISPR/Cas9 system, is widely used to generate new animal models. However, the generation of mutations, such as conditional knock-out or knock-in, can remain complex and inefficient, in particular because of the difficulty to deliver the donor DNA (single or double stranded) into the nucleus of fertilized oocytes. The use of recombinant adeno-associated viruses (rAAV) as donor DNA is a rapidly developing approach that promises to improve the efficiency of creation of animal models.

Ascending-to-Descending Aortic Bypass of a Thoracic Stent Graft Infection with a Rare Pathogen.

Surg Infect (Larchmt)

January 2025

Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou Medical Center, Chang Gung University, Taoyuan City, Taiwan.

Stent graft infection (SGI) caused by complex is rare. The usage of ascending-to-descending aortic bypass (ADAB) in such situations has not yet been fully discussed. Case report and literature review.
