Structural and functional fetal cardiac imaging using low field (0.55 T) MRI.

Front Pediatr

September 2024

Research Department of Early Life Imaging, School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences, King's College London, London, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the use of a 0.55 T MRI scanner for detailed imaging of fetal hearts, optimizing techniques and measuring blood flow in key vessels.* -
  • Researchers improved imaging sequences to enhance signal-to-noise ratios, resulting in clearer images of fetal cardiac structures, with assessments by experts confirming the quality.* -
  • The findings indicate that MRI-generated blood flow measurements are comparable to those from ultrasound, showing strong agreement, particularly at lower flow rates.*

Virtual reality (VR) technology emerges as a promising tool for investigating human perception and behavior in highly controlled, immersive, and risk-free environments. This study proposed to apply simulated VR technology to investigate the interactions between perceived crash risk and behavior patterns in a road crossing with changes in the safety-related environmental attributes. In the context of the 8-meter-wide segment in a residential block, 35 VR environments with variations of six environmental attributes were generated.

Campaigns to circumcise millions of boys and men to reduce HIV transmission are being conducted throughout eastern and southern Africa, recommended by the World Health Organization and implemented by the United States government and Western NGOs. In the United States, proposals to mass-circumcise African and African American men are longstanding, and have historically relied on racist beliefs and stereotypes. The present campaigns were started in haste, without adequate contextual research, and the manner in which they have been carried out implies troubling assumptions about culture, health, and sexuality in Africa, as well as a failure to properly consider the economic determinants of HIV prevalence.

Rapid diagnostic tests for common infection syndromes: less haste, more speed.

J Antimicrob Chemother

August 2020

Nuffield Department of Primary Health Care Sciences, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

Rapid diagnostic tests, which accurately distinguish bacterial from viral infections, are being heralded as the solution to antibiotic overuse, which is a key driver of antimicrobial resistance. We have concerns that this approach is oversimplistic. Rapid diagnostic tests are complex interventions, with clinical context, patient flow, access and timing affecting their impact.
