Published: October 2005

Despite its nearly universal applications, protamine, a mixture of four major peptides with different sequences, is associated with clinically significant side effects. Through a well-designed enzyme digestion method, various low molecular weight protamine peptides were obtained. Among them, two low molecular weight protamine peptides with the same or even more potent heparin neutralization abilities as native protamine were identified through both in vitro and in vivo tests. In addition, in vivo experiments showed that compared to native protamine, these two low molecular weight protamine peptides were less toxic and would be safer for clinical use.

Anxiolytic-like Effect of Chrysin on Female Zebrafish is Likely Mediated by α5 subunits of GABAA Receptors.

Chrysin (5,7-dihydroxyflavone) is a natural flavonoid with potential anxiolytic-like effects in preclinical models. Acute treatment with this molecule (0 - 10 mg/kg) produced a biphasic dose-response in the zebrafish light/dark test (LDT), with anxiolytic-like effect at low doses and anxiogenic-like effects at high doses. Chrysin (1 mg/kg) decreased anxiety-like behavior in the zebrafish novel tank test (NTT), but did not prevent the anxiogenic effects of acute stress.

Connecting the dots: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms and serrated polyps in the appendix.

Am J Clin Pathol

January 2025

Department of Pathology, Immunology, and Laboratory Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, FL, United States.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) and serrated polyps (SPs) of the appendix, both characterized by KRAS mutations and overlapping morphologic features.

Methods: We analyzed 27 cases of LAMN and 24 cases of SP from archival records, reviewed pathology, and performed molecular analysis on select cases. Four cases initially diagnosed as LAMN were excluded for not meeting diagnostic criteria, and 1 SP case was reclassified as LAMN.

The increasing power and integration of electronic devices have intensified serious heat accumulation, driving the demand for higher intrinsic thermal conductivity in thermal interface materials, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Grafting mesogens onto PDMS can enhance its intrinsic thermal conductivity. However, the high stability of the PDMS chain limits the grafting density of mesogens, restricting the improvement in thermal conductivity.

A Ring-Shaped Lithium Metal Anode Enables High-Performance All-Solid-State Batteries Revealed by In Situ L-Band EPR Imaging.

In traditional operations of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs), a small thin lithium metal circular disk is employed as a lithium metal anode (LMA). However, ASSLMBs with a circular-disk LMA often fail in <150 cycles with low capacity retention. In this work, we developed a new ring-shaped LMA to improve cyclability.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs), along with their pathogenic property in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), require comprehensive analyses and explanations. The study is established with the purpose to elucidate the potential molecular mechanism of circATP9A in NSCLC. CircATP9A and microRNA (miR)-582-3p were evaluated by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and ribosomal protein large P0 (RPLP0), cleaved caspase-3, cleaved Ki-67, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated proteins (N-cadherin and E-cadherin), and core proteins of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway were by Western blot.
