Optimization of follow-up measurements of bone mass.

In bone densitometry, the precision of the instrument, the number of measurements and the time-points of the measurements are important criteria for monitoring bone mass changes. The most appropriate follow-up procedure can be determined by numerical comparison of various combinations of these three criteria. This can be done by computing the confidence interval of changes in bone mass. We developed a model to estimate the length of a confidence interval for the observed changes in individual patients. With specific instrument precision, a specified number of measurements and, assuming a linear rate of bone mass changes, the best estimate of the actual changes in bone mass is obtained by measurements at the end of an observation period. With the current precision of bone densitometers, follow-up of patients with yearly duplicate measurements is recommended. A shorter scan time interval offers no additional information unless very rapid bone loss is expected.

Background: Limb-salvage surgery for malignant bone tumors can be associated with considerable perioperative blood loss. The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to assess the safety and efficacy of the intraoperative infusion of tranexamic acid (TXA) in children and adolescents undergoing limb-salvage surgery.

Methods: All participants were <18 years of age at the time of surgery and diagnosed with a malignant bone tumor of the femur that was treated with resection and reconstruction with a megaprosthesis.

Diagnostic properties of differing BP thresholds for adverse pregnancy outcomes in standard-risk nulliparous women: A secondary analysis of SCOPE cohort data.

PLoS Med

Department of Women and Children's Health, School of Life Course and Population Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, King's College London, London, United Kingdom.

Background: In 2017, the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) lowered blood pressure (BP) thresholds to define hypertension in adults outside pregnancy. If used in pregnancy, these lower thresholds may identify women at increased risk of adverse outcomes, which would be particularly useful to risk-stratify nulliparous women. In this secondary analysis of the SCOPE cohort, we asked whether, among standard-risk nulliparous women, the ACC/AHA BP categories could identify women at increased risk for adverse outcomes.

Basal implants as a treatment alternative for severely resorbed ridges.

Minerva Dent Oral Sci

January 2025

RAK College of Dental Sciences, Department of Prosthodontics, RAK Medical and Health Sciences University, Ras Al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term treatment outcomes of basal implants in patients with severely resorbed ridges, including the survival and success rates, patient complaints, satisfaction, and Quality of Life.

Evidence Acquisition: An extensive electronic search was conducted on the search engines: PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT) and the key words (basal implants, Corticobasal implants, Strategic Implants, severely resorbed ridge, severely atrophic ridge, treatment outcome, patient satisfaction) within the last 10 years.

Evidence Synthesis: A total of 21 articles were found, encompassing 9732 basal implants placed in 1219 patients.

The Diagnosis and Therapy of Osteoporosis in Gaucher Disease.

Calcif Tissue Int

January 2025

Fondazione FIRMO Onlus, Italian Foundation for the Research On Bone Diseases, Florence, Italy.

Gaucher disease is a rare lysosomal storage disorder characterized by the accumulation of glucocerebroside lipids within multiple organs due to a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme (acid β-glucosidase). It is an inherited autosomal recessive disease. The onset of symptoms can vary depending on disease type and severity, with milder forms presenting in adulthood.

Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) remains a significant challenge after heart transplantation, necessitating effective surveillance methods. This review centers around the role of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in CAV surveillance, given its unique capabilities to visualize and quantify CAV in comparison with other imaging modalities, including invasive coronary angiography and intravascular ultrasound. CCTA has shown good diagnostic performance for detecting and monitoring CAV, exemplified by a higher sensitivity and negative predictive value compared with invasive coronary angiography.
