The trouble with universal declarations.

A number of problems plague universal declarations. To the extent that those drafting and adopting the declaration represent a range of different views, consensus can only be obtained if the declaration makes minimalist claims that all can support, or makes claims that are vague enough that they can be interpreted to everybody's satisfaction. To the extent that a universal declaration avoids these problems, and takes an unequivocal and controversial stand, it does so by privileging the view that is hegemonic (at least among those responsible for the declaration). After discussing these problems I ask whether such declarations could nonetheless do any good.

Reversibly Tuning Electrochemiluminescence with Stimulated Emission Route for Single-Cell Imaging.

Research (Wash D C)

October 2023

State Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of the Environment, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210023, P. R. China.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has established itself as an excellent transduction technique in biosensing and light-emitting device, while conventional ECL mechanism depending on spontaneous emission of luminophores lacks reversibility and tunable emission characters, limiting the universality of ECL technique in the fields of fundamental research and clinical applications. Here, we report the first observation of stimulated emission route in ECL and thus establish a reversible tuning ECL microscopy for single-cell imaging. This microscopy uses a focused red-shifted beam to transfer spontaneous ECL into stimulated ECL, which enables selective and reversible tuning of ECL emission from homogeneous solution, single particles, and single cells.

Surgical management of benign tumors of the parotid gland: the advantages of extracapsular dissection compared to traditional surgical techniques.

Front Surg

Introduction: Salivary gland tumors represent only 3%-6% of all head and neck neoplasms, and approximately 70% of these tumors are located in the parotid gland. Most of these tumors are found in the more abundant superficial portion of the parotid gland, lateral to the facial nerve (FN). For many years, the location of the facial nerve between the superficial and deep segments of the parotid gland hindered adequate tumor extirpation.

The interplay of electronic charge, spin, and orbital currents, coherently driven by picosecond long oscillations of light fields in spin-orbit coupled systems, is the foundation of emerging terahertz lightwave spintronics and orbitronics. The essential rules for how terahertz fields interact with these systems in a nonlinear way are still not understood. In this work, we demonstrate a universally applicable electronic nonlinearity originating from spin-orbit interactions in conducting materials, wherein the interplay of light-induced spin and orbital textures manifests.

Aim: The aim of the study is to compare the remaining dentinal thickness in the single-rooted tooth at the coronal, middle, and apical third using three different rotary instrumentation techniques using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Materials And Methodology: Sixty-eight noncarious single-rooted teeth were collected and decoronated at the level of cementoenamel junction with a diamond disc. All specimens were randomly divided into three experimental groups - Manual ProTaper Universal (PTU; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), Protaper Gold (PTG; Dentsply Maillefer), Waveone Gold (Dentsply Maillefer) and one control group of 17 teeth each.

Introduction: Critically ill patients present multiple risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Underdosing of antithrombotic medications can result in VTE even as bleeding remains a significant concern for critically ill patients. On the other hand bleeding, remaining a significant concern for the critically ill, can be worsend by overdosing of antithrombotic medications.
