JAE: Jemboss Alignment Editor.

Appl Bioinformatics

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge, UK.

Published: December 2005

Unlabelled: One of the most basic methods of understanding the biological significance of a sequence is to produce an alignment with related sequences. A vital aspect of correctly aligning sequences is to apply biological intuition through manual editing of an alignment produced by multiple-sequence alignment software. As part of the European Molecular Biology Open Source Software Suite (EMBOSS), a new alignment editor in the Jemboss package is freely available for download. The Jemboss Alignment Editor (JAE) incorporates standard methods of editing, and colouring residues and nucleotides to highlight important regions of interest. JAE also makes use of scoring matrices (PAM and BLOSUM), selected by the user, to display regions of high degrees of similarity and identity. Other tools include the ability to calculate a consensus, a consensus plot (using a selected scoring matrix) and pairwise identities.

Availability: The JAE can be launched from the webpage (http://emboss.sourceforge.net/Jemboss/).

Management of Dupuytren's Disease: A Multi-Centric Comparative Analysis Between Experienced Hand Surgeons Versus Artificial Intelligence.

Diagnostics (Basel)

February 2025

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Peninsula Health, Frankston, VIC 3199, Australia.

: Dupuytren's fibroproliferative disease affecting the hand's palmar fascia leads to progressive finger contractures and functional limitations. Management of this condition relies heavily on the expertise of hand surgeons, who tailor interventions based on clinical assessment. With the growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) in medical decision-making, this study aims to evaluate the feasibility of integrating AI into the clinical management of Dupuytren's disease by comparing AI-generated recommendations with those of expert hand surgeons.

Unlabelled: Identification of early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains a challenge due to limited specialist availability, diagnostic access, disease awareness, and cultural factors. Blood-based biomarkers (BBBM) could play a critical role in the identification and referral of patients suspected of AD to specialty care. A multidisciplinary AD Biomarker Task Force was convened to evaluate current biomarker use cases, define an optimal biomarker-enabled AD diagnostic care pathway, and understand factors impacting adoption.

Does Periacetabular Osteotomy Affect the Load Distribution on the Knee?

Clin Orthop Relat Res

March 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan.

Background: Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) treats developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) by reducing load on the hip and improving joint function. Untreated DDH affects lower extremity alignment and alters knee morphology, with valgus alignment more pronounced in hip osteoarthritis secondary to DDH. While PAO may influence knee mechanics, its association with subchondral bone density in the tibiofemoral joint remains unclear.

Objectives: Urine cultures are often automatically obtained after urinary catheterization in young children, even in the absence of pyuria, to test for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Although this practice conflicts with some newer guidelines, it is frequently followed in busy emergency departments (EDs) to minimize the need for a repeat invasive procedure. To assess the implications of this longstanding practice, we aimed to describe the frequency and characteristics of children with normal urinalysis (UA) and positive urine culture obtained via catheterization, and to describe their clinical course.

Purpose: Weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT) creates colour-coded distance maps (DM) to analyze intraarticular contact areas, offering a detailed assessment of joint surface interactions. However, clinical applications of DM remain underexplored. This study introduces the 'Battleship technique (BST)' to evaluate contact area patterns in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the talar dome, producing a single point representing the distance map weighted sum (DMWS).
