A triplet pregnancy is described, in which the diagnosis of in utero growth restriction is questioned after postnatal suspicion of superfetation, by using neurosonography and ophthalmic examination to aid gestational age assessment.

Pregnancy Complications and Feto-Maternal Monitoring in Rabbits.

Vet Sci

October 2023

Rabbit production holds significant relevance in modern agriculture due to its potential as a sustainable source of high-quality protein and efficient feed conversion, contributing to food security and economic diversification. Nevertheless, studies incorporating feto-maternal monitoring in this species are uncommon. This review gathers research on the monitoring and evaluation of factors affecting rabbit gestation, providing a better understanding of the causes of prenatal development abnormalities.

The evolution of the placenta in poeciliid fishes.

How and why complex organs evolve is generally lost to history. The mammalian placenta, for example, was derived from a single common ancestor that lived over 100 million years ago. Therefore, the selective factors favoring this complex trait remain obscure.

Culture of Mink Preimplantation Embryos.

The reproduction of the mink, Neovison vison, has been extensively studied over the past 70 years. The endocrine control of pregnancy is reasonably well understood, but our understanding of early embryo development is limited. The mink is one of the best characterized mammals for the study of embryonic diapause, but in order to unravel the complex interactions that occur between the blastocyst and the uterus during diapause and reactivation, a defined culture media system that supports growth is essential.

The evolution of the placenta from a non-placental ancestor causes a shift of maternal investment from pre- to post-fertilization, creating a venue for parent-offspring conflicts during pregnancy. Theory predicts that the rise of these conflicts should drive a shift from a reliance on pre-copulatory female mate choice to polyandry in conjunction with post-zygotic mechanisms of sexual selection. This hypothesis has not yet been empirically tested.

This study presents a description of the life histories of all four species of the genus Phallichthys, found primarily in the Atlantic slope of Central America (ranging from northern Panama to Mexico), based on a combination of data collected from preserved and living specimens. All species produced a single litter of offspring before developing another brood (i.e.
