Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a rare inherited disorder of connective tissue characterized by hyperextensible skin, hypermobile joints, and abnormalities of the cardiovascular system. Most patients are unaware of their disease until a catastrophic event such as arterial rupture or bowel perforation occurs. Aortic disruption accounts for many of the deaths in EDS type IV cases and only two cases of survival after spontaneous aortic rupture have previously been reported. We report on a third case of a survivor of spontaneous abdominal aortic rupture in EDS type IV.

A 69-year-old male diagnosed with subacute myocardial infarction was subsequently transferred to our institution. Upon admission, echocardiography revealed ventricular septal rupture (VSR). The patient was promptly supported via venoarterial (VA) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and Impella CP before surgical VSR repair on the 12th day of admission.

Objective: The outer false lumen wall (FLW) changes from thin/compliant to thick/rigid as aortic dissection transitions from the acute to chronic phase. This study investigates biomechanical stiffness and histological changes of the FLW as the dissected aorta ages.
Methods: The free outer FLW from human tissue was analyzed from chronic type B dissection (chronic-FLW) n = 10, acute type A dissection (acute-FLW) n = 10, and transplant donor descending aorta that was manually peeled into 2 layers (control-FLW) n = 17.

Approximately 2%-12% of individuals aged > 65 years worldwide are estimated to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), with a mortality rate exceeding 60% in rupture cases. The sole preventive intervention against rupture is timely surgery, which requires substantial medical resources, including postoperative complication management. Although numerous randomized clinical trials have been performed, no oral medication effectively treats AAA.

Background: Cardiac tamponade complicating transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) typically results from right ventricular (RV) injury induced by a pacemaker electrode, left ventricular (LV) injury induced by guidewires and catheters used during the procedure, and rupture of the aortic annulus during valve implantation.
Methods: We retrospectively analysed our institutional TAVR database to gain mechanistic insights relating to this complication.
Results: A total of 1247 TAVR procedures were performed from 2010 to 2024.
