Double-dose ivermectin vs albendazole for the treatment of gnathostomiasis.

Published: May 2005

A comparative study was performed for the treatment of gnathostomiasis patients with ivermectin 0.2 mg/kg for 2 days in 15 patients vs albendazole 400 mg twice daily for 21 days in 14 patients. The ivermectin and albendazole gave cure rates of 100% and 78.5%, respectively, however the difference was not statistically significant between the two drugs (Fisher's exact, p=0.0996). One year after treatment, the patients who had no migratory swellings and a drop in ELISA titers or a negative immunoblot test were considered to be cured. The side effect of ivermectin for two days was dizziness. The side effects of albendazole were nausea, dizziness, and an increased alkaline phosphatase.

Introduction: This paper presents (a) the progress made towards achieving the 2023 Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign goals, (b) the estimated financial savings resulting from integrating LF MDA into Polio immunization campaigns, and (c) the best practices, challenges, and recommendations.

Methods: In 2023, 21,336,057 people in 83 districts were affected by LF and required Preventive Chemotherapy (PC). The National NTD Control Programme (NTDCP) conducted three phases of LF MDA campaigns in those districts.

Albendazole/ivermectin combination therapy is a promising alternative to benzimidazole monotherapy alone for Trichuris trichiura control. We used fecal DNA metabarcoding to genetically characterize Trichuris spp. populations in patient samples from Côte d'Ivoire showing lower (egg reduction rate <70%) albendazole/ivermectin sensitivity than those from Laos and Tanzania (egg reduction rates >98%).

Background: Different areas of sheep infected with different types of parasites, all will cause serious harm to the local sheep, and the widespread use and repeated use of anthelmintics have produced different degrees of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in various regions. We re-investigated the infection of common parasites and AR of Gastrointestinal Nematodes (GINs) in sheep in Horqin Right Wing Front Banner, and first investigated the common parasite types and AR of GINs in sheep at other four areas in Hinggan league (city), China.

Results: A total of 1770 fecal samples were collected from 1 prefecture-level city and 4 counties in Hinggan league, in which the infection rate of Coccidia ranged from 83.

Strongyloides hyperinfection and disseminated infections are usually associated with immunosuppression; these severe manifestations occur in a minority of cases. The use of immunosuppressants such as corticosteroids and Baricitinib for treating COVID-19 pneumonia can be responsible for patients' immunosuppression and cause Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome. The chance increases when the patient belongs to countries or regions where chronic infection with Strongyloides is more prevalent.

Trichuris trichiura, a soil-transmitted helminth (STH), often persists after a single dose of anthelminthic treatment. To overcome limited efficacy against T. trichiura of benzimidazoles (albendazole or mebendazole), the primary drugs used in mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns, the World Health Organization endorses the use of a combination of ivermectin and albendazole as a more effective treatment to be used for preventive chemotherapy.
