Theories and studies of ecosystem emergence focus on macro level explanations such as government investments in research and development or those at the organizational level such as displacement of an older technological system by a new one through competition between technologies. However, mechanisms by which such shifts occur are underemphasized. This article draws on complexity theory to develop a theoretical framework to describe how emergence is generated through top down 'rules' that constrain the behavior of the system, directing it towards a desired outcome.

Although posthumous reproduction (PHR) is viewed unfavorably by some, it may be a desirable option for subjects whose partners died before they could complete their family planning. With particular regard to posthumous embryo implantation, questions arise regarding the definition of "conception" when a couple undergoes in vitro fertilization while both are alive, but the embryo is implanted in a woman's womb after one parent has died. In accordance with Italian Law 40/2004, access to medically assisted reproduction is contingent upon the survival of both partners in a couple.

Protected area management often depends heavily on law enforcement to secure compliance with rules. However, this can contribute to conflict between protected area authorities and local people, negatively affecting both human well-being and conservation outcomes. Compliance is affected by many factors, including whether those who enforce rules are perceived to do so fairly, as well as the perceived rule-related behavior of others.
