Motivation: Visualizing and analysing the potential non-linear structure of a dataset is becoming an important task in molecular biology. This is even more challenging when the data have missing values.
Results: Here, we propose an inverse model that performs non-linear principal component analysis (NLPCA) from incomplete datasets. Missing values are ignored while optimizing the model, but can be estimated afterwards. Results are shown for both artificial and experimental datasets. In contrast to linear methods, non-linear methods were able to give better missing value estimations for non-linear structured data.
Application: We applied this technique to a time course of metabolite data from a cold stress experiment on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, and could approximate the mapping function from any time point to the metabolite responses. Thus, the inverse NLPCA provides greatly improved information for better understanding the complex response to cold stress.

Background: Neutrophils interact with tumor cells, potentially exacerbating cancer progression. Additionally, decreased albumin levels are a marker of poor cancer prognosis. The neutrophil-percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) has been used for prognostic assessment in non-cancerous diseases, but its relationship with mortality risk in cancer patients has not been explored.

Background: Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) particularly when coupled with acute respiratory failure (ARF), markedly elevates mortality rates. This investigation focuses on pivotal inflammatory markers in exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lactate-to-albumin ratio (LAR), glucose-to-lymphocyte ratio (GLR), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), which are easily determinable from peripheral blood. We aimed to investigate the prognostic value of NLR, LAR, GLR, SII, PNI, and PLR for in-hospital mortality among AECOPD patients with ARF.

Climate change is considered to affect wildfire spread both by increasing fuel dryness and by altering vegetation mass and structure. However, the direct effect of global warming on wildfires is hard to quantify due to the multiple non-climatic factors involved in their ignition and spread. By combining wildfire observations with the latest generation of climate models, here we show that more than half of the large wildfires (area>500 ha) occurring in the Iberian Peninsula between 2001 and 2021 present a significant increase in the rate of spread with respect to what it would have been in the pre-industrial period, attributable to global warming.

Existing studies have established a linear relationship between urban environments and adolescent health, but the combined impacts of subjective and objective environments on multi-dimensional health status (including physical and mental health) have not been fully explored. Furthermore, while some studies have examined the non-linear relationship between urban environments and adult health, research specifically focusing on adolescents is sparse. Using Kunming, China, as a case study, we employ Random Forest model to examine the non-linear relationship between subjective/objective neighborhood environments and adolescent physical/mental health.
