A vernier optometer, based on the Scheiner principle, that makes use of polarized light, is designed and developed. It is specialized in measurement of tonic accommodation, accommodation and accommodation response. The vernier optometer has been proved by chinical testing results, to be a reliable and effective instrument with fine stabilily, good repeatability and sensitivity for short sight study relating to oculogyral parameters.

Background: The purpose of this study was to develop a more accurate and precise method for measuring subjective sphero-cylindrical refractive errors. It employed the principles of a vernier optometer and meridional refraction.

Methods: A meridional polarized vernier optometer was used to measure the refraction of three subjects.

[Measuring the level of tonic accomodation as a function of wavelength].

J Fr Ophtalmol

October 1995

Université de Montréal, Laboratoire d'Optique physiologique, Ecole d'Optométrie, Québec, Canada.

Purpose: Tonic accommodation contributes to the refractive state of the human eye in the absence of any visual stimulation. As the power of the eye, tonic accommodation level should be a function of wavelength and its variation should constitute a measure of longitudinal chromatic aberration of the eye.

Methods: The level of tonic accommodation was measured with a vernier optometer on a sample of 10 subjects (21-39 years).

Prior studies reported that the resting postures of accommodation and vergence are uncoupled in darkness, calling into question whether accommodation-vergence synkinesis persists when both systems are deprived of stimulation. We tracked the postures of accommodation and vergence of 20 normal subjects for 15 min in darkness, using a Vernier optometer and dichoptic nonius lines. Consistent with previous reports, the mean resting postures of accommodation and vergence correlated weakly (r = 0.

The longitudinal chromatic aberration of the eye has been reported to decline with age. Using three different methods, we have measured the aberration in a group of young subjects (27-33 years old) and a group of older subjects (48-72 years old). In two of the methods we used a Badal optometer, either with or without an achromatizing lens incorporated, to examine the effect of wavelength on refractive error.
