Xenopus is an essential vertebrate model system for biomedical research that has contributed to important discoveries in many disciplines, including cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology, and neurobiology. However, unlike other model systems no central repository/stock center for Xenopus had been established until recently. Similar to mouse, zebrafish, and fly communities, which have established stock centers, Xenopus researchers need to maintain and distribute rapidly growing numbers of inbred, mutant, and transgenic frog strains, along with DNA and protein resources, and individual laboratories struggle to accomplish this efficiently.

Radiation-reducing planning of cardiac catheterisation.

Any radiation exposition for medical purposes should be kept as low as is reasonably achievable. Mean patient radiation exposure of diagnostic cardiac catheterisation is high (16-106 Gy x cm2) and for this reason the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommends credentialing radiation protection training programmes. Twenty cardiologists each documented various dose parameters of 10 cardiac catheterisations, before and after a 90-minute mini-course of the ELICIT study group ("Encourage to Less Irradiating Cardiologic Interventional Techniques"), and could achieve a reduction of the mean dose-area product by 15.

This article examines two major challenges that beset contemporary social work education, namely, rapid and dramatic macro-level changes that are occurring in the social, political, economic and demographic realms and, also, the slow speed at which curriculum changes occur in institutions of higher education. Primarily employing managed care as an example, a series of recommendations are offered to improve social work education concerning health care. Among them are more efficient mechanisms for introducing curriculum changes, greater emphasis on research and evaluations skills, systematic monitoring of health care programs, preparation of public impact reports, better utilization of modern information technologies, and the introduction of mini-courses that can be adapted readily to emerging health care and educational needs.
