The Boréon area in the Mercantour Massif, S.E. France, was contaminated by radionuclides after the Chernobyl accident in the first days of May 1986. Sediments from a small mountain lake in this area were collected, as well as forest soils in its vicinity, in order to obtain 137Cs and 210Pb profiles. Calculated from the 210Pb inventory in a soil of a horizontal area, the flux is high in the area (0.06 Bqcm(-2)y(-1)) probably because of the great frequency of rain and uranium ores outcropping in the massif. The comparison of the 137Cs soil inventories and the unsupported 210Pb suggests that the 137Cs fallout due to the Chernobyl accident in the study site (Boréon) was at least 3.5 Bqcm(-2), more probably the double. The recent lake sediments still undergo a rather strong contamination by 137Cs and the sediment profiles show that the residence time of 137Cs in the catchment area is long. The study area is frequented by many inhabitants of the city of Nice and other cities at the Mediterranean coast during week-end and during summer and winter holidays. Thus the 137Cs external exposure impact was evaluated at 2 mSvy(-1) for 2002 in the most contaminated point.

Fallout Cs signals as chrono-markers in Chinese lake sediment cores.

Sci Total Environ

February 2025

School of Marine Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhuhai 519082, China. Electronic address:

This study comprehensively investigated the Cs signal in 294 sediment core samples from 132 lakes including reservoir and Gobi catchment in China. First, three Cs chrono-markers were observed: the 1963 peak corresponding to the maximum deposition of radioactive debris from global fallout, and two local sub-peaks corresponding to the time of the nuclear tests at Chinese Lop Nor site with a maximum in 1976, and to the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Second, the spatial distribution of sedimentation rates based on the 1963 Cs chrono-marker in Chinese lake sediment cores was studied.

Background: The increase of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) rate among children who were exposed to post-Chernobyl 131-I release was reported only four years after the accident, first in Belarus where the heaviest fallout happened. The evolution of the occurrence of thyroid carcinoma based on the age-period-cohort analysis and the effects of age, period, and birth cohort on time trends aimed to reveal if post-Chernobyl follicular cells irradiation still has been impacting on incidence rate of papillary thyroid carcinoma nowadays.

Methods: The Belarusian Cancer Registry was used to identify patients with PTC diagnosed during the years 1980-2019.

Is increased mutation driving genetic diversity in dogs within the Chornobyl exclusion zone?

Environmental contamination can have lasting impacts on surrounding communities, though the long-term impacts can be difficult to ascertain. The disaster at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 and subsequent remediation efforts resulted in contamination of the local environment with radioactive material, heavy metals, and additional environmental toxicants. Many of these are mutagenic in nature, and the full effect of these exposures on local flora and fauna has yet to be understood.

The objective was to study the relationship between clinical symptoms and the functional state of the bronchopulmonary system of clean-up workers of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the remote post-accident period.Materials and methods. A retrospective analysis of 824 cases of COPD in male patients who underwent inpatienttreatment in the radiation pulmonology department from 2014 to 2024 was conducted.
