The DEAR (DAPhiNE exotic atom research) experiment measured the energy of x rays emitted in the transitions to the ground state of kaonic hydrogen. The measured values for the shift epsilon and the width Gamma of the 1s state due to the K(-)p strong interaction are epsilon(1s)=-193 +/- 37 (stat) +/- 6 (syst) eV and Gamma(1s)=249 +/- 111 (stat) +/- 30 (syst) eV, the most precise values yet obtained. The pattern of the kaonic hydrogen K-series lines, K(alpha), K(beta), and K(gamma), was disentangled for the first time.

Article Synopsis
  • Kaonic atom X-ray spectroscopy helps explore the strong interactions between kaons and atomic nuclei/nucleons, using soft X-ray emissions (<20 keV) from light kaonic atoms like hydrogen and helium as well as ongoing research for harder X-ray emissions (>20 keV) from intermediate kaonic atoms like carbon and aluminum.
  • New experiments, particularly the SIDDHARTA-2 and EXCALIBUR proposals, focus on making precise measurements using advanced cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detectors, which can effectively detect hard X-rays and gamma-rays.
  • A prototype CZT detector showed impressive performance at room temperature, achieving significant energy resolution in its measurements, and experiments conducted at the DAΦNE collider

We calculate the shape of the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] invariant mass distributions in the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] decays that are dominated by the [Formula: see text] resonance. The weak interaction part is the same for both processes and the hadronization into the different meson-baryon channels in the final state is given by symmetry arguments. The most important feature is the implementation of the meson-baryon final-state interaction using two chiral unitary models from different theoretical groups.

Surprises in threshold antikaon-nucleon physics.

Low energy KN interactions are studied within unitary chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order with ten coupled channels. We pay special attention to the recent precise determination of the strong shift and width of the kaonic hydrogen 1s state by the DEAR Collaboration that has challenged our theoretical understanding of this sector of strong interactions. We typically find two classes of solutions, both of them reproducing previous data, that either can or cannot accommodate the DEAR measurements.

Kaonic hydrogen and K(-)p scattering.

Chiral SU(3) effective field theory in combination with a relativistic coupled-channels approach is used to perform a novel analysis of the strong-interaction shift and width in kaonic hydrogen in view of the new accurate DEAR measurements. Questions of consistency with previous K(-)p data are examined. Coulomb and isospin breaking effects turn out to be important and are both taken into account in this work.
