The dynamics of elongation and burst of an isolated viscoelastic drop are investigated numerically in the special case of a viscosity ratio lambda = 1 . We show that the burst threshold is not affected by viscoelasticity itself, whereas the stationary drop morphology is. A dimple at the tips of the drop can even be observed when elastic effects are large. The burst dynamics is very sensitive to the presence of viscoelasticity: at low elasticity burst is slowed down while for large elasticity levels it becomes even faster than the Newtonian situation.

Seed priming can effectively enhance the plant's ability to withstand stress during subsequent growth and development; however, the role of melatonin-priming in attenuating aluminum (Al) toxicity remain unknown. In this study, 10, 50 and 100 μM melatonin were selected for rice seed priming to investigate the protective effects and potential mechanisms of melatonin against Al toxicity. Al stress inhibited seed germination by induction of abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation and reduction of α-amylase activity.

The elastic response of chromium-tanned leather was successfully improved by treatment with XSBR, a carboxylated styrene-butadiene copolymer. The carboxylic groups pending from a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) backbone were found to promote penetration of the aqueous polymer dispersion into the fibrous tanned leather and participated in pH-reversible physical crosslinking by H-bonding. The different penetrations of XSBR or SBR were investigated using a micro-FTIR cross-sectional analysis from the grain (outer) to the flesh (inner) side of 18 wt% elastomer-treated samples, based on the shaved leather weight.

As one of the heavy metal pollutants with strong biological toxicity, cadmium (Cd) is easily absorbed by plant roots, which seriously restricts the growth of plants, causes the quality of agricultural products to decline and threatens human health. Many complex signal transduction pathways are involved in the process of plant response to Cd stress. Among them, plant hormone ethylene is an important signal molecule for plant response to various environmental stresses, and its regulatory mechanism and signal transduction pathway in Cd stress response need to be further clarified.
