Chemically generated hydroxyl radicals were scavenged by PEG-modified fullerene, hydroxy-fullerene and isostearate-mixed fullerene as efficiently as ascorbic acid (Asc) or its 2-O-phosphorylated derivative (A2P) as shown by the DMPO-spin trap/ESR method. Enzymatically generated superoxide anion radicals were also scavenged by PEG-modified or PVP-entrapped fullerene similarly as done by Asc or A2P. Some reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroperoxides and hydrogen peroxides were generated preferably in the nuclei of UVB-irradiated human skin keratinocytes HaCaT, and repressed by PVP- or gamma-cyclodextrin-fullerene. In contrast, the cytoplasm in the keratinocytes accumulated the ROS that were generated by the peroxylipid model compound t-BuOOH, and underwent the ROS repression by PVP-fullerene more markedly than by A2P. Thus several fullerene derivatives, especially PVP-fullerene, were shown to diminish the ROS amounts in terms of the molecular and cellular levels against either UVB or t-BuOOH, suggesting the expectation for development as rejuvenation cosmetics.

Herein, we present the first experimental study of individual water-soluble fullerene derivatives proving their ability to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. The initial screening allowed us to identify a few new compounds that have demonstrated pronounced antiviral activity with IC values as low as 390 nM and selectivity indexes reaching 214. Time-of-addition analysis and molecular docking results suggested that the viral protease and/or the spike protein are the most probable targets inhibited by the fullerene derivatives.

The nanoscale chiral arrangement in a bicomponent organic material system comprising donor and acceptor small molecules is shown to depend on the thickness of a film that is responsive to chiral light in an optoelectronic device. In this bulk heterojunction, a previously unreported chiral bis(diketopyrrolopyrrole) derivative was combined with an achiral non-fullerene acceptor. The optical activity of the chiral compound is dramatically different in the pure material and the composite, showing how the electron acceptor influences the donor's arrangement compared with the pure molecule.

A golden fullerene with a composition of [Au(PhP)(5-CF-Hpa)] (CFCOO) (5-CF-Hpa=5-trifluoropyridyl-2-amine) (Au) has been synthesized with pyridylamino and phosphine ligands as the protecting agents. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis reveals that the cluster has a D Au core, which can be depicted as a centered core-shell structure Au@Au@Au. The 41 Au atoms of the Au@Au core-shell can be derived from placing a gold atom in the center of each polygon of C (D).

Van Hove singularity (vHs), the singularity point of density of states (DOS) in crystalline solids, is a research hotspot in emerging phenomena such as light-matter interaction, superconducting, and quantum anomalous Hall effect. Although the significance of vHs in photothermoelectric (PTE) effect has been recognized, its integral role in electron excitation and thermoelectric effect is still unclear, particularly in the mid-infrared band that suffers from Pauli blockade in semimetals. Here, we unveil the Fermi-level-modulated PTE behavior in the vicinity of vHs in carbon nanotubes, employing ionic-liquid gating.

Due to their tunable energy levels, ability for intense light absorption, stability and ease of purification, non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have significantly contributed to the progress of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Herein, a series of newly designed and synthesized NFAs specifically tailored are presented for OPV applications. A new class of NFAs possessing carbazole, fluorene, silafluorene derivatives, and benzothiadiazoles are synthesized.
